The new version of The Running Man is already a big hit on streaming services. Featuring Glen Powell, this 2025 sci-fi action movie is the second time Stephen King’s 1982 novel has been adapted for the screen, following the 1987 film with Arnold Schwarzenegger. It originally came out in theaters in November 2025 and became available on Paramount+ on January 13th.
As of today, January 13th, the remake of The Running Man is the most popular movie on Paramount+ in the United States. It’s currently ranked number one, with the original Running Man film coming in at number four. The remake is also performing better than other titles like Roofman, Regretting You, Fighting, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Barron’s Cove, PAW Patrol: The Movie, PAW Patrol: Super Charged, and 50 First Dates.
Edgar Wright directed and co-wrote the screenplay for The Running Man, a film starring Glen Powell as Ben Richards, a working-class man who enters a dangerous game show to earn money for his daughter’s medical care. In this dystopian competition, known as Runners must evade professional hunters for 30 days, with the reward increasing each day they survive.
Alongside Glen Powell as the main actor, The Running Man features a strong supporting cast including Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, Emilia Jones, William H. Macy, Daniel Ezra, Jayme Lawson, Katy O’Brian, Karl Glusman, Martin Herlihy, Sean Hayes, and David Zayas.
Okay, so I finally saw The Running Man, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Critics seem split – it’s sitting at around 63% on Rotten Tomatoes. A lot of them said it wasn’t quite as clever or innovative as other stuff director Edgar Wright has done, but even so, it’s still a really stylish and energetic movie. It definitely takes the original story and just goes with it, delivering a fast-paced thrill ride.
Viewers generally liked the movie, giving it a 78% approval rating. They found it to be a fast-paced and exciting remake, largely thanks to Glen Powell’s captivating performance. However, it doesn’t explore the more serious issues present in the original as deeply.
Although the remake received mixed reviews and didn’t perform well in theaters, it has found success on Paramount+ in the US. High viewership numbers show people are finding and enjoying The Running Man through streaming, which gives the film a second chance and eases some of the disappointment from its initial box office failure.
