The new movie version of Stephen King’s The Running Man has received its rating, following in the footsteps of the original film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Glenn Powell plays Ben Richards, a contestant in the dangerous competition of the same name, who is fighting to earn money to help his ill daughter. This adaptation is based on King’s 1982 novel.
Film Ratings has added the upcoming 2025 adaptation of The Running Man to its website, and it’s been given an R rating by the MPA. The rating is due to strong violence, some graphic content, and language. This makes the new film similar to the original 1987 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, which also received an R rating upon release.
The upcoming film, The Running Man, will be a fresh take on the story, distinct from the Schwarzenegger movie. Director Edgar Wright and co-writer Michael Bacall intend to create a version that stays much closer to Stephen King’s original novel, which differs significantly from the 1987 film adaptation.

In addition to Dave Bautista as Powell, The Running Man will feature several well-known actors. Josh Brolin will play Dan Killian, the producer of the show, while Colman Domingo will be Bobby Thompson, the host. Lee Pace joins the cast as Evan McCone, a hunter who becomes a dangerous opponent for Ben and drives up ratings with his popularity.
The new rating for The Running Man follows a trend for Stephen King adaptations in 2025, with The Monkey and The Long Walk also receiving R ratings. MGM+’s The Institute is rated TV-MA. However, this particular film, starring Powell, earned its R rating more for its action and suspense than for any horror content.
The movie’s R rating will allow it to more accurately capture the darker and more complex themes of the original novel, something the previous adaptation missed. Trailers suggest this new film will stay true to the source material while also forging its own path.
As the release of The Running Man gets closer, the movie appears to be packed with the intense, action-filled scenes fans expect from the original game. Given its distinct tone – a departure from the earlier Schwarzenegger film – a strong rating seems fitting for this promising adaptation.
