The Rookie Season 9’s Cast Change Confirmed After Intense Season 8 Finale

Some things are changing in MidWilshire when it returns for The Rookie season 9.

Season 8 of The Rookie was an incredibly dramatic ride. It started with a large-scale operation in Prague, setting the tone for a season filled with both everyday police work and major investigations alongside the FBI. Throughout the season, viewers also saw the return of familiar antagonists like Liam Glasser and Oscar Hutchinson, while Monica Stevens’ storyline finally came to a close in the second-to-last episode.

At its heart, The Rookie has always been about its characters. Throughout the 2025-2026 seasons, we saw major life changes for many of them – Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen moved in together and got engaged, Wade Grey shifted his career path, and Wesley Evers left his job. As The Rookie moves into its ninth season, expect continued personal growth for the Mid-Wilshire team, but also anticipate some new faces and changes within the squad when the show returns.

Speaking with Deadline, creator Alexi Hawley revealed that a new rookie will be joining the cast. This follows Miles Penn’s graduation from the program, as hinted at by Nyla Harper in the episode “The Bandit.” While Hawley wouldn’t promise this new character will be a series regular throughout season 9, he’s committed to introducing one or two new rookies when the show returns. You’re right, that’s accurate. We still need to determine exactly what that will look like. As we’ve discussed, a new recruit presents a chance to tell two stories: who they are as an individual, and how their presence impacts those around them, particularly their trainer. I believe that will be a key element.

We’ve definitely seen new cast members not work out in the past. For example, one actor accidentally fired a gun on his first day! We also had a memorable episode with Katy O’Brian before her character’s storyline ended, and I really enjoyed her scenes with Tim. Because of this, we always have to be prepared for initial plans to change throughout the season.

We still have a few things to work out, but you’re right on track. As we head into Season 9, we definitely need to bring in at least one new player, and I’m focusing on making that happen.

As a big fan of The Rookie, I was really relieved to hear from Alexi Hawley that the core cast will be back for season nine! That pretty much puts to rest any worries about Nathan Fillion potentially leaving. Now, the show has a bit of a puzzle to solve: how do they keep his character involved after he steps down as Watch Commander? With Lucy and Tim getting kidnapped at the end of last season, he’ll definitely be central to the search, but honestly, beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess where they’ll take his storyline. I’m definitely curious to see how it all plays out!

With Miles now graduating, he and Celina are the youngest officers on the force before the next group of recruits arrive. Hopefully, the upcoming ninth season of The Rookie will give them more developed storylines. They sometimes felt overlooked in the last season, which is unfortunate because they have a lot of potential. Miles, in particular, needs to be more involved with the team so the show can fully explore his character.

The popular show The Rookie is growing! A second spin-off, starring Jay Ellis, is in the works and will be set in the Pacific Northwest. They’ve already filmed a crossover episode, so if ABC approves the new show, it will be important to clearly connect it to the original. The Rookie might even introduce some characters who eventually move from Los Angeles to join the new team up north.
