The Rookie is officially expanding up north.
For eight seasons, Nathan Fillion’s show has been a consistent hit for ABC. It’s performed very well beyond traditional TV ratings, gaining a large following on streaming platforms and social media, making it a key part of the network’s lineup. Although the latest season ended with a major cliffhanger for the team at Mid-Wilshire, there’s exciting news for fans of the show coming next season.
Fans have been eagerly anticipating a new spin-off from the creator of The Rookie after The Rookie: Feds concluded. The new series, officially named The Rookie: North, will feature Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a character similar to John Nolan but working in the Pacific Northwest. The show will follow Holland as he joins the police force seeking a new direction, investigating cases that range from city streets to remote forests.
After a long wait, ABC has confirmed that The Rookie: North will become a full television series, as reported by Variety. Currently, details about production or the number of episodes for the new series haven’t been released.
Joining Nathan Ellis in The Rookie: North are Chris Sullivan, Karen Fukuhara, Froy Gutierrez, Janet Montgomery, Mya Lowe, and Malik Watson. Like the original The Rookie, the show relies heavily on the connection between its actors. Although the story begins with Holland’s situation, the show will likely explore the backgrounds and stories of all the characters. Ellis has assured fans that they’ll come to care for this new team in the Pacific Northwest just as much as they did the team at Mid-Wilshire.
I’m still waiting to find out when The Rookie: North will premiere! ABC hasn’t announced its full schedule for the 2026-2027 season yet, and they’re the last of the major networks to do so. It’s interesting because the original The Rookie usually starts airing in the winter, not with the big fall premieres like a lot of their other shows. I’m wondering if ABC might try to build a whole night around Nathan Fillion’s shows, airing them back-to-back, to help The Rookie: North get more viewers.
There was some uncertainty about the future of “The Rookie: North” after ABC announced plans for a second season of “RJ Decker.” The network, owned by Disney, was deciding which of the two shows would fill the last open hour of its 2026-2027 schedule. Now that both shows have been renewed, it’s likely they’ll share the timeslot, resulting in shorter seasons of around 10-13 episodes each, instead of the typical 18-22.
