The Rookie: Henry and Abigail Break Up, Chenford Forgives Tim!

Caution: The Rookie Season 7 Episode 15, set to air on ABC on April 22, brings back a cherished character. Titled “A Deadly Secret,” this episode is presented in the format of a true crime documentary, maintaining the series’ established approach. The storyline revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Abigail, who was first introduced as Henry’s fiancée in Season 2 Episode 5. Interestingly, Nolan discloses to the director that Henry and Abigail are no longer a couple.

In this episode, Chenford experiences significant progress as both former partners discover they unknowingly encountered sodium pentothal, often referred to as truth serum. Tim confesses that he ended things with Lucy as a self-inflicted punishment, a habit instilled in him by his abusive father. Despite her initial difficulties overcoming Tim’s actions, she admits that she has already forgiven him, even shocking herself with this unexpected confession.

Discusses an interview with Alexi Hawley, the showrunner for The Rookie, regarding Madeleine Coghlan’s appearance on screen again, Lucy’s unintentional confession to Tim, and the mysterious ending of The Rookie season 7, episode 15.

Hawley Felt That The Henry-Abigail Relationship Had Run Its Course In The Rookie

“She wasn’t at the wedding in Episode 100, and it just sort of felt like a little bit of explaining that away.”

In ScreenRant’s article, it is mentioned that you were part of the same episode. Previously, I had a chat with Jon Huertas, and he shared that he was the one who persuaded you to make an on-screen appearance in the previous instance.

As a devoted fan of true crime documentaries, I must admit, it’s a genre that both intrigues and presents unique challenges. When it was announced that this individual would be directing the upcoming production, my initial reaction was far from enthusiasm. The script, in its current state, left me somewhat unimpressed, primarily because it seemed overly familiar, despite the numerous twists and turns it promised.

In other words, our initial plan was for me to create a documentary, but some real-life event derailed that and instead the documentary ended up being about that very incident, which I found intriguing. This year, however, we decided to explore a ghost hunting horror movie style, something new for us, and it turned out fantastic.

What made you decide to both bring Abigail back and break up her and Henry?

Essentially, Madeleine Coghlan, our gifted actress who portrays Abigail, has also joined the show’s writing team since last season. Moreover, Maddie demonstrates exceptional acting, writing, and directing skills. In other words, she’s a triple threat in this industry. Consequently, we were keen to bring her character back.

She was with us during the beginning, but by Episode 100, it seemed like the Henry-Abigail relationship had run its course and she wasn’t at the wedding. This required a bit of explanation, but it provided an interesting twist for Nolan’s true crime episode, allowing us to feature Maddie more prominently.

What does that ending mean then? Could there be demons in The Rookie?

Alexi Hawley: Indeed, it’s quite intriguing! After all, the world can be quite mysterious. I’m glad we have characters such as Celina, and to some extent Lopez, who hold onto values like good and evil. They firmly believe in these concepts. So, that’s always engaging.

There’s More To Chenford’s Reconciliation Than Lucy’s Forgiveness

“Down the road, there could be some trepidation or fear about, ‘What if it’s not like it was before?'”

How was interviewing your son [Zander Hawley] for this episode?

Alexi Hawley: That was enjoyable. The whole thing began with what we referred to as “Daddy Cop,” which was Glen Mazzara, a writer-producer for us at the time. He proposed an idea where Nolan and Celina would pull over a car during a traffic stop in front of a garage band. In response, the band would make fun of them through song.

Immediately, I phoned Zander as he’s an exceptionally gifted musician, and presented him with the idea. By the following morning, he had essentially composed “Daddy Cop,” which was fantastic, and everything just seemed to fall into place miraculously. In the end, due to its success, we decided to reintroduce it again, which we did numerous times for the hundredth.

Then I found myself pondering, “How do we proceed with this?” It suddenly struck me, the unexpected scene of encountering Rodge, introduced as the one dating a new person, followed by him and Nolan acknowledging each other’s familiarity. The whole situation felt delightfully unusual. To have Rodge join in, along with Lisseth as Celina, created an enjoyable dynamic. It was all a pleasure to be part of.

In a twist of events, Tim and Lucy encounter a truth-telling substance, leading Lucy to confess that she has previously forgiven him. Can anyone pinpoint when this heartfelt moment transpires within the series?

In a previous episode, perhaps a couple of instalments back, she shared with him in the car that she hadn’t completely let go of her anger towards him. It seems that during this period, she might have unconsciously come to terms with accepting his apology and truly forgiving him.

What struck me about that instance was how it served as an epiphany for her too. With the truth serum, she realizes that she has truly forgiven him for all his transgressions – something I believe we’ve been gradually working up to. I simply adore the fact that this realization came across in a subtle yet profound way, like a soft “Ah-ha!” moment.

After her epiphany, could the outcome of their relationship hinge on the sergeant’s examination?

Alexi Hawley: I believe that’s a significant aspect indeed. There seems to be a tangible hurdle that needs resolution. Moreover, in theory, as time progresses, there might be apprehension or anxiety about whether things will return to how they were. It’s not just a matter of passing the sergeant’s exam and then resuming our relationship again. However, I do believe that the season’s narrative has shown a strong desire, but when it becomes reality, what will it look like if it happens?

About The Rookie Season 7 On ABC

Created And Executive Produced By Alexi Hawley

As an ardent follower of the series, I’ve always admired John Nolan. Once the senior-most newbie in the LAPD, he leveraged his life lessons, grit, and wit to match rookies half his age. However, recently recuperating from a gunshot wound and grappling with the repercussions of aging, our team finds itself welcoming two fresh recruits. Simultaneously, we’re on the trail of two dangerous fugitives, each harboring personal grudges that make them formidable adversaries.
