Okay, so if you’re like me and love a good action flick, you pretty much know Michael Bay. He owns that genre, especially with stuff like his breakout film from ’96. As of today, he’s directed sixteen movies, and honestly, most of them are pure adrenaline-fueled action. Even when he dips his toes into other genres – like with the dark comedy Pain & Gain from 2013 – there’s still plenty of action and physicality to keep you on the edge of your seat. He just knows how to deliver a visually exciting experience!
Michael Bay has directed massive franchises like Transformers and the first Bad Boys movies, plus many other films. It’s not surprising then that some of his older work, even the good stuff, has faded from public memory. For example, The Rock isn’t discussed much anymore, but it still holds up as an exciting action movie after almost thirty years.
The Rock Is One of Michael Bay’s Best Movies
The action movie The Rock centers around a disgruntled General Francis Hummel (Ed Harris) who feels his fallen soldiers haven’t received proper recognition. Driven by a desire for revenge, he plans to unleash deadly gas into the San Francisco Bay Area, utilizing rockets and targeting Alcatraz Island, all while clashing with the United States government.
Hummel and his team take over Alcatraz Island to carry out their scheme. The U.S. government then calls in retired Captain John Mason, a former escapee of the prison, and Dr. Stanley Goodspeed, an expert in chemical weapons, to sneak onto the island and disarm the rockets.
Michael Bay has developed a very distinct and energetic directing style. Looking back at The Rock, it’s clear the film isn’t just packed with action and adventure; the emotional and physical stakes escalate with every scene. Bay’s films are visually stunning, incredibly dramatic, and full of explosive energy. The action sequences are massive in scale, the dialogue is sharp and sticks with you, and setting the story on Alcatraz Island was a brilliant choice.
From a chemistry standpoint, the cast of The Rock is perfect, with each actor delivering a flawless performance. Sean Connery powerfully embodies the hardened Mason, while Nicolas Cage shines as the quirky biochemist. Their combined performance is exceptional; the dynamic between Mason and Goodspeed is consistently engaging and well-balanced.
While General Hummel is presented as the villain, he’s a surprisingly compelling character, thanks to his unique perspective and background in the military. Harris perfectly captures this complexity, and the scenes with him and the other two leads are particularly captivating – they truly elevate the film beyond its other elements.
If you’re looking for thrilling action and great entertainment, The Rock is a film you won’t want to miss, whether you’ve seen it before or not. The movie’s central conflict – involving biological weapons and the threat of mass destruction – immediately creates a fast-paced and exciting race against time to stop the villain from destroying San Francisco.
The movie showcases a wide variety of cars and impressive driving stunts, with a particularly exciting chase scene featuring Mason in a customized Hummer and Goodspeed in a stunning Ferrari.
The Rock Overcomes Behind-the-Scenes Drama
The movie industry often faces controversy, both privately and publicly. This is certainly the case with director Michael Bay, whose films have frequently encountered problems. For example, Megan Fox, known for her role as Mikaela Barnes in the first two Transformers movies, was fired before Transformers: Dark of the Moon after comparing Bay to Napoleon and Hitler.
Throughout his career, Michael Bay has faced other criticisms, though less serious than some. These include CGI that doesn’t always look convincing, the overly sexualized depiction of female characters, and obvious advertising within his films.
Despite being a popular and well-regarded action film with memorable lines, The Rock didn’t give credit to all the writers who worked on it. While David Weisberg, Douglas S. Cook, and Mark Rosner are officially credited with the screenplay, at least three other writers contributed but weren’t listed in the credits: Jonathan Hensleigh (known for Jumanji and Armageddon), Aaron Sorkin (famous for A Few Good Men and The Social Network), and…
In the entertainment industry, Disney is a company you definitely don’t want to upset. Director Michael Bay shared in a DVD commentary that Disney executives called several meetings during the making of one of his action movies because they were worried about its direction. During one of those meetings, a key figure stepped in to support Bay and his creative process, convincing Disney that the film was on track and would ultimately be a success – and it turned out he was right.
Interestingly, the movie The Rock became connected to the events leading up to the 2003 Invasion of Iraq. Several months before the invasion began, British intelligence (MI6) claimed that Iraq was developing new weapons, including anthrax, based on information from a reliable source.
A key factor in Britain’s decision to join the Iraq War was intelligence information that later proved to be false. It was discovered that the source used by MI6 wasn’t reliable and had actually taken details from a 1996 film.
The Rock Continues to Stand the Test of Time
As a big fan of action movies, I still really enjoy The Rock – it’s aged surprisingly well, even if people don’t talk about it as much these days. When it came out, it was a huge hit, finishing 1996 as the fourth highest-grossing film with over $336 million worldwide. Critics generally liked it back then, especially the action sequences, the great cast, and how fun it was to watch. Even Roger Ebert gave it a strong 3.5 out of 4 stars! As of today, it still has a respectable 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a solid 7.4/10 on IMDb.

Nicolas Cage shines in The Rock, delivering what many consider to be one of his strongest performances. Over a 45-year career, he’s appeared in around 100 films – a remarkable achievement. He’s known for playing unusual and powerful characters, often with a captivating charm. His role as Goodspeed in The Rock perfectly embodies these traits, while also showcasing the character’s intelligence – qualities Cage brings to life memorably.
The Rock remains a classic action film, widely available from retailers like Amazon. It’s a great movie because it deals with relatable themes, but it’s also an easy, enjoyable watch – you don’t need to think too hard to have a good time.
What makes this movie stand out is its interesting take on government corruption and mistrust, especially considering the way the story is told – some might even see the traditional ‘villain’ in a different light. The chemistry between the two main characters, Mason and Goodspeed, feels natural and classic. It’s a fast-paced, thrilling ride where everyone has something to lose, but the plot remains clear and easy to follow.
Even after nearly thirty years, The Rock remains a satisfying standalone film, despite past discussions about a sequel. In 2017, director Michael Bay suggested a follow-up where Goodspeed and his wife, Carla Pestalozzi (played by Vanessa Marcil), would be on the run from the US government after escaping Alcatraz with highly sensitive information. Unfortunately, this potential continuation of Nicolas Cage’s character never moved beyond the idea stage.
While a sequel might seem like a good idea given the time that’s passed and Sean Connery’s passing in 2020, it’s probably best to leave well enough alone and not make one.
