The Road’s Gretchen Wilson Opens Up About Going From A ‘Very ‘Hot And Heavy’ Singing Show To Keith Urban And Blake Shelton’s New Series

Premiering in fall 2025, The Road is the latest music competition on network television, but it’s unlike shows like The Voice or American Idol. Instead of performing for judges, the contestants are opening for Keith Urban on his tour, playing to crowds who came to see him. Grammy-winning country star Gretchen Wilson, who recently won The Masked Singer, is the show’s Tour Manager. She recently shared with TopMob how managing this tour differs from her experience on that other competition.

Gretchen Wilson was the winner of Season 13 of The Masked Singer, performing as the Pearl and keeping her identity hidden until the very end. She recently told me about the experience of moving from that show to her current tour, The Road.

This show was much lighter and more fun than the last one. [laughs] That previous show was incredibly intense – the pressure, the secrecy, and not being able to talk about it or promote it for weeks was a lot. I don’t think anything really compares to The Masked Singer; it’s a completely different experience.

Working as a contestant on one show and a tour manager for contestants on another was always going to be a different experience, but The Masked Singer feels completely different from The Road. As Gretchen Wilson described it:

From the moment I arrived, everyone acknowledged how over-the-top the show was, which was funny – it was good they were aware of it too! Everyone really enjoyed themselves, and surprisingly, I did as well. It was incredibly demanding work, but I’m actually glad I experienced it. It made working on ‘The Road’ feel much easier and more relaxed in comparison.

Catch new episodes of The Road on CBS Sundays at 9:30 p.m. Eastern Time, and watch them the next day on Paramount+. If you missed Gretchen Wilson on The Masked Singer, you can stream Season 13 with a Hulu subscription.
