Is ‘The Rip’ Based on a True Story?
The movie The Rip is based on a true story. Director and writer Joe Carnahan shared in an interview with Netflix Tudum that the film’s plot came from a friend’s real-life experience working with the Miami Dade police. While the movie likely exaggerates the drama, the core of the story is rooted in actual events.
My novel, The Rip, was born from a close friend’s experiences – both as a father and as a leader in the Miami Dade police department’s narcotics division. It’s inspired by his life, and also by my lifelong love of classic 1970s cop thrillers. Those films, like Serpico, Prince of the City, and more recently Michael Mann’s Heat, really focused on the characters and their relationships, and they’ve always stayed with me.
Director Carnahan clarified that the term “Rip” means seizing the belongings of criminals – a phrase commonly used by the Miami police department.
In police jargon from Miami, ‘The Rip’ refers to taking items from criminals – essentially, stealing their possessions. When police confiscate things like cash, drugs, or weapons, that act of taking is called ‘the rip’.
