The new movie The Rip, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, is now streaming on Netflix. It’s an action-packed thriller following a group of Miami police officers who uncover a huge sum of money from a drug cartel, and the resulting conflict it causes, but the film also includes a heartfelt tribute.
Director Joe Carnahan shared that the movie is inspired by a true story – a raid that his friend, Chris Casiano, was involved in.
In 2021, Casiano experienced the heartbreaking loss of his 11-year-old son, Jake William Casiano, to leukemia. The film includes a dedication to Jake, and Damon’s character also grieves the loss of a son named Jake to cancer, mirroring Casiano’s personal tragedy.

In a conversation with Gold Derby, Carnahan described a difficult situation: needing to tell a friend he didn’t want to create something that would feel exploitative or disrespectful to the friend’s son’s memory.
I suggested we find a way to honor Jake’s memory by creating something lasting from our sadness – a kind of living memorial to his life, however brief. Chris agreed, and I’m so grateful to him for that.

He shared that he showed the film to a friend about a month ago while in Miami, and they both cried a lot while watching it. He described the experience as incredibly emotional and powerful.
Honestly, it meant a lot to me that Jake was the first thing you noticed. I really wanted you to understand there was a real person, a genuine soul, behind everything – a heart beating at the core of it all.
He said he really enjoys the film’s smaller, more personal moments. While he loves the action and plot twists, it’s those little details that truly stand out to him and make the movie special.

This film marks another collaboration between director Ben Affleck and actor Casey Affleck, who previously worked together on the 2006 movie Smokin’ Aces.
As a director himself, he complimented the actor’s willingness to work together and expressed his belief that Ben Affleck deserved to win the Best Director Oscar for Argo.
The Rip is available now on Netflix.
The latest issue of Living Legends is out now, and it’s dedicated to the incredible Dolly Parton! You can find ‘Dolly at 80’ in newsagents or online for only £8.99.
