The Rings of Power star Sophia Nomvete promises lots more Disa and Durin in season 2

As a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, I eagerly await the second season of “The Rings of Power” on Prime Video. The first season’s introduction of Disa, the dwarven princess played by Sophia Nomvete, was a breath of fresh air in a world filled with prophecies and grand destinies.

The series titled “The Rings of Power” is preparing to debut its second season on Amazon Prime Video. This prequel to “Lord of the Rings” takes place during the Second Age of Middle-earth, a time period much older than when characters such as Bilbo and Frodo were alive. It features an array of fresh characters, some derived from J.R.R. Tolkien’s appendices in his “Lord of the Rings” books and others created specifically for television.

Among the new additions to the cast is Disa, who is married to Dwarven Prince Durin IV. Portrayed by Sophia Nomvete, Disa was one of the most endearing aspects of the initial season for me. In a series where many characters are constantly discussing grand powers, destinies, and such, Disa and Durin (played by Owain Arthur) appeared to lead a relatively ordinary life as a couple, filled with boisterous children and domestic squabbles. Nomvete hints at more of this relatable dynamic in season 2, but with an unexpected turn: she teased that there will be additional depth added to their storyline.

Nomvete shared that the union has received such positive responses, making them relatable to many. Expect more of that in season 2, but the challenges they face will be significantly greater. Previously, their disagreements were back-and-forth, but now these conflicts carry significant weight. However, their affection for each other and their kingdom remains strong. They’re constantly grappling with questions like ‘How do we handle this? How do we manage that?’ Yet, they persevere with determination. In season 2, you’ll find them as Durin and Disa, a duo often referred to as double D, though please don’t cite that reference.

Too late. You heard it here: “Durin and Disa, double D.”

The Rings of Power star welcomes discussion and pushback on the show

Nomvete added, “I believe Season 1 laid a lot of groundwork. But as for these female dwarves, I’m still figuring out their appearance, especially since I’m new to the TV scene. It was a lot of setting up, a lot of hard work: physical tasks, vocal exercises, mastering accents. However, it resonated so positively with everyone, including us actors. We felt it perfectly suited our characters. So for Season 2, we can build upon that foundation, explore more, but keep the essence and spirit of the dwarven culture that we established and loved.”

The initial season of “The Rings of Power” was generally appreciated by many viewers; however, there were also numerous fans who had mixed feelings, either desiring the series to adhere more closely to Tolkien’s original lore or finding it somewhat underwhelming. Nomvete acknowledges this ongoing discussion but views it as nothing to be concerned about.

Nomvete expressed that as an artist, she values open dialogue since art is not meant to be universally agreed upon. She finds excitement in the diversity of perspectives on their work, stating that it’s crucial for them to create an authentic narrative and share it with the world. While positive responses are gratifying, she also cherishes the challenges from audiences who may find the story or choices difficult. In her view, this exchange of ideas fosters a dynamic environment where people process information differently, making art more vibrant and engaging.

It seems like that approach is quite insightful. The initial series sparked lively debates, and I suspect the next one will do the same. As long as the team continues to create work they are truly invested in, viewers will continue to support them.

On Thursday, August 29, you can catch the debut of the second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video. In an exciting twist, the initial three episodes will be released simultaneously, followed by the rest of the five episodes on a weekly basis, one episode per week.
