The Rings of Power star Charlie Vickers breaks down Sauron's insane scene with Celebrimbor (Exclusive)

As a long-time fan of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth, I must say that Charlie Vickers’ portrayal of Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been nothing short of breathtaking. The second season finale was a rollercoaster ride of emotions and suspense, and Vickers delivered a chilling performance as Sauron’s true nature finally began to reveal itself.

The second installment of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” concluded with a climactic finish. In this episode, dwarves engaged in combat with a balrog, the true identity of the enigmatic Stranger was revealed, and Sauron, in an act of betrayal, rained arrows upon his comrade Celebrimbor, saying, “See the destruction you’re causing yourself.

In that intriguing interaction between Sauron (Charlie Vickers) and Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), things took a dramatic turn; throughout the season, Sauron had been collaborating with Celebrimbor to create the Rings of Power, but when Celebrimbor concealed the nine rings destined for mortal men, Sauron swiftly transformed into the malevolent figure we recognize from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, tormenting his ally without a hint of remorse or regret in his actions.

As a devoted fan, I had the incredible opportunity to chat with Charlie Vickers himself, and he spilled the beans on a particularly intriguing scene. “It was the part that caught our attention the most when we were going through the script,” he shared with me. “When people ask which scene I’m most excited about, and I say, ‘Well, there’s one in episode eight, but I can’t reveal it.’ But now I finally can!

It was an incredibly intense day, two days even. But we did the bulk of it on one day. And yeah, it was demanding. Charlie in particular had really long speech that he had to do. And then he was hoisted up the wall when he was impaled on the spear. It was really swings and roundabouts. And it’s kind of the first window into Sauron’s full descent into darkness, because we’ve seen him and we know that he’s manipulating, but now he’s openly torturing someone. And I think it was also exciting because it’s canonical, right? Celebrimbor’s torso was full of arrows when he died. And so to be able to tell that story and then impale him on the spear and hoist him into the air was really cool, because it’s an iconic image in Tolkien.

Charlie Vickers says Sauron is “sincere” about his dream of peace

As a devoted fan, I find myself pondering Sauron’s intentions lately. He repeatedly claims his desire is to heal Middle-earth and establish tranquility across the land, yet his actions are questionable. He’s been known to betray friends, striking them with arrows, and even played a role in the devastation of the elven city of Eregion. Now, he commands an army of orcs. Given this background, I can’t help but wonder just how genuine his quest for peace truly is.

Vickers explained to us, “From his point of view and mine, what he does is genuine.” He added that Tolkien intended to restore and reform Middle-earth, but also stated that Sauron represents the ultimate evil in his tales. As an actor, Vickers must balance these aspects, making sure all actions are authentic yet grounded in truth. However, he noted that by playing the villain, he serves the story well. The two roles aren’t contradictory; Sauron can act according to what he believes is right while occasionally overstepping boundaries from our perspective. But for Sauron, such actions are just temporary setbacks before moving on.

And in a sadistic way, you see that in the scene, he kills Celebrimbor and he is quite emotional and out of control and upset about it, because Celebrimbor was a great, great creative partner and someone he really respected and he really could have used Celebrimbor. But also he’s hidden the nine from him and Celebrimbor has defeated him in that moment. So you see him kill him and then he just kind of changes when Glug comes in, the orc, and is on to the next task.

According to Celebrimbor, Sauron is a master deceiver; he even deceives himself, and I find this intriguing. Similarly, actress Vickers expressed her delight in portraying the complexities of her character as she uncovers more of his true nature in season 2. She finds it fascinating to explore these darker aspects, but what excites her most is speculating about Sauron’s future actions and manipulations. After all, he is a deceiver, so there’s always something new for the actor to delve into.

Appreciate Charlie Vickers for chatting with us! Currently, you can watch both seasons of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon Prime Video. Regarding season 3, there’s been no official confirmation yet, but it seems like we might not have to wait much longer.
