The Rings of Power season 2 looks fun, but it's hard to get over this absurd hurdle

As a lifelong fan of Tolkien’s epic saga, I must confess that my initial skepticism about “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” has been somewhat alleviated by the second season’s trailers. The monsters, the swords, and the magical rings – it’s all quite enticing! However, as a seasoned fan, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow at some creative liberties taken with the source material.

The upcoming second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” promises an exciting viewing experience. Monsters roam freely, warriors with British accents engage in sword fights, and mysterious rings capable of enslaving Middle-earth’s populace to the Dark Lord Sauron are introduced…there seems little to dislike!

For dedicated fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’, who value the intricacies of his mythology, ‘The Rings of Power’ might cause some frustration due to its departure from the original source material. Characters like Sauron are reimagined as Halbrand, Tom Bombadil seems to aid a potentially unrecognizable Gandalf, and Galadriel’s husband Celeborn is noticeably absent. However, if you approach the series as an expensive, entertaining diversion rather than a strict adaptation, it becomes more enjoyable.

As a lifelong fantasy fan, I can’t help but be intrigued by the latest twist in this show – the revelation that Halbrand is none other than Sauron himself! Growing up with Tolkien’s epic tales of Middle Earth, I never imagined seeing such a clever and unexpected turn of events on screen. It’s fascinating to see how the creators have taken the lore and woven it into a new and exciting story. As someone who has always loved the complexities and depth of these characters, I can’t wait to see where they take this plot in future seasons!

In J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion,” it was revealed that Celebrimbor, the primary elven blacksmith, had a chance encounter with Halbrand in season 1. As we move forward into season 2, Sauron is set to make a comeback, disguised as a fair-haired elf. In this new form, he once used the name Annatar, the Giver of Gifts. With such a deception in place, it’s expected that Sauron will reconnect with Celebrimbor once more.

Many viewers are curious about this: how did Celebrimbor, along with other characters aware of Halbrand being Sauron, manage not to see through him? Interestingly, Charlie Vickers portrays both personas; he dons elf ears and a blonde wig for the role of Annatar. This has sparked amusing conversations in most trailers of The Rings of Power that Amazon has released so far.

Sauron: “It’s my disguise.”
Celebrimbor: “But I can clearly see that it’s you.”
Sauron: puts on bad wig “Not if I do this you can’t.”

Let it not be said that the internet doesn’t bring the sass.

It appears Celebrimbor may come to understand that Halbrand and Annatar, Sauron in disguise, are one entity. However, his decision to collaborate with him raises an issue because Sauron is a notorious evil leader who previously served under Morgoth, the first dark lord. This behavior by Celebrimbor, knowing Sauron’s malicious intentions yet working with him, seems inconsistent with how Tolkien portrayed elves in his works. Furthermore, it’s important to note that this situation does not align with the original source material.

I’m willing to momentarily forget about that idea and observe the situation unfold, as life is simply too precious to be bogged down by persistent stress and tension. Consider all the diverse life forms around us!

The upcoming second installment of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is set to debut on Amazon Prime Video on August 29.
