The Rings of Power season 2 early ratings actually aren’t that bad

The Rings of Power season 2 early ratings actually aren't that bad

As a die-hard fan who grew up reading Tolkien’s masterpieces under the shadow of Middle Earth, I can’t help but feel a sense of kinship with the creators of The Rings of Power. It’s not just about the magic and the epic battles, it’s about the journey, the characters, and the world-building that takes me back to my childhood dreams.

From the reaction to SambaTV’s assessment of the viewership for The Ring of Power season 2 premiere, it appears as though many believe Frodo might have failed and the One Ring could have returned to Sauron’s grasp.

As reported by Samba TV, the debut of Season 2 of “The Rings of Power” on Amazon Prime Video, which aired on August 29th, was initially viewed in approximately 902,000 households. This is a significant drop compared to the 1.8 million households that tuned in for the premiere of Season 1.

It’s clear that what I’m about to say might not seem great. After all, only about half of those who started the series with the first episode went on to watch the second season premiere. Naturally, Prime Video would want more viewers for the debut of The Rings of Power Season 2. Although Amazon hasn’t revealed any specific figures for The Rings of Power, the initial season held the record for the largest premiere for a new series on their platform, according to Deadline.

It appears to me that the critique about the second season premiere of The Rings of Power might not be entirely balanced. Instead, it seems as though some are seizing an opportunity to criticize a show that isn’t widely regarded as one of the top-tier TV series.

In comparison to other similar shows, The Rings of Power isn’t too far behind. Interestingly, Samba TV reports that only about 1.3 million viewers watched the premiere of House of the Dragon season 2 in its initial days. This is a significant drop compared to the season 1 premiere, with viewership being cut almost in half. Surprisingly, this is just 400,000 more viewers than The Rings of Power season 2 attracted. Given that House of the Dragon is generally considered a superior show, this difference makes sense.

It seems that both “The Rings of Power” and “House of the Dragon” have experienced a decrease in viewership as they began their second seasons. Besides George R.R. Martin, is there anyone else expressing worry about the future of “House of the Dragon”?

Delving a bit more into the details, the fourth season of “Only Murders in the Building” and “The Rings of Power” both started streaming on Hulu recently. While “The Rings of Power” is widely recognized as one of the top shows on television currently, the initial viewership for its season 4 premiere was 634,000 viewers on Hulu during its first week, as reported by Samba TV. This number is approximately 298,000 fewer viewers than the premiere of “The Rings of Power”‘s second season.

Compared to other recently launched series, the debut of season 2 for “The Rings of Power” is larger on streaming platforms than “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” on Disney+, but it falls short of “3 Body Problem” slightly. Additionally, its viewership is roughly half of what Hulu recorded for “Shogun.” These findings are based on data from Samba TV.

According to reports, “The Rings of Power” is said to be one of the priciest TV shows in existence. However, there’s no questioning its stunning and awe-inspiring visuals. Despite us not being involved with Amazon, it’s natural that we hope the show gets renewed, as more viewers mean a higher chance of continuation. That said, I couldn’t care less about the amount Amazon invests in the show, as long as it keeps airing and we get to witness the complete vision shared by JD Payne and Patrick McKay for this series.

I enjoy “The Rings of Power,” but it’s not my absolute favorite TV series. At times, certain decisions made by the show can be frustrating or annoying for me. However, overall, I still think it’s a good show. To put it simply, while it has its flaws, I appreciate The Lord of the Rings world that this show brings to life. The positives definitely outweigh the negatives for me.

It’s understandable that everyone anticipates “The Rings of Power” to be successful, given how much acclaim “The Lord of the Rings” by Peter Jackson enjoys as one of the most cherished and renowned film series ever made. Contrarily, the Hobbit movies didn’t garner the same level of success. That’s just how it sometimes turns out.

I’m not giving up in The Rings of Power just yet, and neither should you.
