The Rings of Power bosses say they're writing season 3...but there's no renewal yet

As a film enthusiast with a deep-rooted passion for all things Tolkien, I must say that the anticipation for Season 3 of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is driving me madder than Shelob herself!

As a die-hard fan of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about season 3 ever since the finale of season 2 on Amazon Prime Video barely a month ago. I understand that a month isn’t an eternity, but shows like this require plenty of time to gear up for production. If they want to deliver fresh episodes in anything close to a swift pace, they need to start scouting locations, rounding up extras, horses, and all the other essentials well ahead of time.

Despite rumors suggesting that viewership for season 2 might not be as high as that of season 1, some viewers are concerned about the future of the show. However, showrunner J.D. Payne has reassured fans by stating on the Rings and Realms podcast that they are currently writing season 3, which offers a glimmer of hope.

Payne additionally mentioned that “a lot is unfolding” on the island of Númenor during the third season of the series, which represents a nation of long-lived humans situated off the coast of Middle-earth. These inhabitants either cherish or begrudge the blessings given to them by the Valar, and some even envy the immortality possessed by elves. Currently, the island is experiencing a time of significant division.

Payne also talked a bit about the character of Elrond, one of the legacy characters fans will remember from the original Lord of the Rings story; he’s younger in this prequel series, but elves live forever so “younger” doesn’t mean as much as it would for you or me. “There are several big tentpole moments that Tolkien gives us with First and Second Age Elrond,” Payne said. “We know that he’s the herald of Gil-galad in the Battle of the Last Alliance. We know that he has this moment going to Eregion and fighting this hopeless, ill-fated battle. Really from moment one, we’ve been thinking about Elrond going through these huge, life-changing events and experiences.”

In the tales of Tolkien, there are significant milestones featuring Elrond during the First and Second Ages that leave a lasting impact. Notably, he serves as Gil-galad’s herald in the Battle of the Last Alliance, and later leads a disastrous battle towards Eregion. From the outset, it appears that Elrond is undergoing transformative events and encounters throughout his long life.

It seems that Payne and co-showrunner Patrick McKay are planning to portray Elrond as a character similar to Job, constantly enduring hardships. According to McKay, “we aim to shatter him because that’s Elrond’s story.” In other words, they view Elrond as a powerful figure for good who experiences significant loss throughout the narrative.

It seems like you’re asking if fans can expect more episodes of this series, given that Amazon has invested significantly in it. The popular show “House of the Dragon,” frequently compared to “The Rings of Power,” was renewed for a third season while still airing its second, and production is underway. However, new episodes aren’t expected until 2026. Considering such a long wait for “House of the Dragon,” it might be challenging for “The Rings of Power” to tolerate delays. But we’ll have to wait and see.
