The Righteous Gemstones Ending: One Thing I’ll Miss Most
Caution: This discussion contains spoilers for ‘The Righteous Gemstones‘ season 4, episode 6, titled ‘Interlude IV’. Previous episodes may also be affected. Proceed with caution if you don’t want the surprises ruined!
2019 brought us HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, a Danny McBride creation that has consistently provided laughter, vulgarity, and tender moments. However, as the year comes to a close, it seems the Gemstone family is preparing to deliver their final message on television. Having been a dedicated viewer since its debut, I find myself reminiscing about the series’ four-season journey. There’s one particular element of this televangelist comedy that I will undoubtedly miss the most.
In the final season of the show “Gemstones,” currently airing as part of the 2025 TV lineup, has been nothing less than flawless in terms of comedy. The story continues to grow with the addition of new characters portrayed by Michael Rooker, Megan Mullally, and even Bradley Cooper. Even established characters are experiencing significant changes, such as BJ, a beloved character, grappling with the aftermath of a tragic event. However, I’d like to shift the focus away from current events and delve into the past of the Gemstone family instead.
What I’m Going To Miss Most About The Righteous Gemstones And Why…
As a film enthusiast, I eagerly anticipate each season of “The Righteous Gemstones,” and one unique aspect that always piques my interest is the inclusion of episodes titled “Interlude.” These special installments offer a refreshing pause from the current adventures of the Gemstone family, instead delving into their colorful past. Unlike regular episodes, these stories are told through the performances of younger actors portraying siblings Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin. Instead of Danny McBride, Edi Patterson, and Adam DeVine, we get to witness these characters in their youth. Additionally, family matriarch Aimee-Leigh (Jennifer Nettles), who’s deceased in the present-day timeline, also makes an appearance in these flashbacks.
Instead of just the different characters being what makes these episodes engaging, it’s actually the way they connect to the larger story arc of each season that I look forward to. These episodes aren’t just standalone stories but serve to offer valuable context for the main plot. Moreover, they significantly contribute to the series’ previously mentioned world-building endeavors as well.

Although there are just four “Interlude” episodes, they’ve been instrumental in creating some of the most memorable scenes throughout the series. As Gemstones approaches its conclusion, let’s reminisce about some pivotal plot points these chapters have presented.

Let’s Talk Out Some Of The Biggest Moments From The “Interlude” Episodes
2019’s “Interlude” is a drama that takes place in 1989, highlighting the strained bond between family matriarch Eli Gemstone and his quirky brother-in-law, “Baby” Billy Freeman. Their complex dynamics lead to several intense encounters, with one unforgettable moment being young Jesse’s outburst at sister Judy’s birthday party.
In “Interlude II,” there’s an escalation of tension as Eli encounters Glendon Marsh, his ex-boss and fight promoter, in 1993. Marsh, a man with criminal ties, tries to force Eli into laundering money through his struggling church. However, it’s Roy Gemstone, suffering from dementia, who ends up shooting Marsh instead. This episode also strengthens the bond between Eli and his trusty sidekick, Martin Imari.
Moving forward, the third installment maintains the intrigue as it delves into the strained relationship between Eli and his sister, May-May. A notable scene involves young Jesse seeking retribution against a bully who had humiliated Judy, doing so by publicly shaming the bully in front of his peers.

Title IV, freshly aired, is as intense as it is sugary sweet. It offers more depth to the friendship between the late Aimee-Leigh and her friend Lori Milsap, whose marriage is on the brink of collapse. This tension reaches its peak when Lori’s husband, Cobb, intrudes into the Gemstones’ home, causing damage. Notably, Cobb not only frightens young Kelvin, who was alone at the time, but also makes off with a precious heirloom Bible that has been passed down through generations.
A while back, I was unsure about what to anticipate when Danny McBride and John Goodman joined forces for a TV sitcom revolving around a televangelist family. However, I’m incredibly pleased they went ahead with it as it ranks among my favorite shows to watch on Max. This opinion is based on the exceptional writing, acting, and direction. The “Interlude” episodes are a significant factor in the show’s allure, even though I’m sorry there won’t be more of them, I’m grateful for the four that have been created.
On Sunday evenings at 10 p.m. Eastern Time, you can catch “The Righteous Gemstones” on HBO. If you’re an HBO Max subscriber, you can also stream the episodes simultaneously.
