The reason why Gisele Bundchen was absent from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show revealed

As someone who has followed Victoria’s Secret for decades, I must say I was left feeling a tad blue when Gisele Bundchen declined to join this year’s revived fashion show. The Brazilian beauty was one of my all-time favorites, and her absence felt like a piece of the show’s history was missing.

Fans were deeply disheartened because Gisele Bundchen was missing from the recent reprise of the Victoria’s Secret fashion show this week.

It has come to light that the iconic supermodel, aged 44, who was part of the brand’s Angel family from 1999 to 2006, was indeed approached to return for the show within the lingerie category. However, she declined the invitation as she had decided to step away from the runway in 2020.

According to TMZ, it was reported that Victoria’s Secret contacted Gisele’s representatives back in June during their castings for the show. However, they politely declined her participation, as she had retired from runway modeling according to her agents.

It’s said that Emmanuelle Alt, who used to lead French Vogue and was fashionable during the Victoria’s Secret show, allegedly attempted to persuade Gisele to return from her retirement, but she chose not to.

Gisele last worked with Victoria’s Secret in 2023 when she modelled for the brand’s Icons campaign.

In 2020, she informed O Globo: “I didn’t express that I would retire, merely that I wouldn’t participate in runways anymore. I will always remain active. My ambition is to keep creating right up until my last day.

Previously, she expressed: ‘On its own, my body signals whether what I am doing is valuable, and it requested a halt. I honor my body, it’s an honor to be able to pause. I’ve come to heed my body’s cues.’

The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in New York featured musical performances from Cher, Tyla and BLACKPINK’s Lisa, while Gigi and Bella Hadid, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio and Ashley Graham walked the runway.

2019 saw the cancellation of the fashion show following poor ratings and numerous contentious issues. Since then, it has been striving to promote inclusivity.

Originally launched in 1995, this show was initially a grand event filled with celebrities from the modeling sphere, boasting figures like Tyra Banks, Heidi Klum, Gisele Bundchen, among others.

Notably, it showcased live music from artists such as Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and The Weeknd.

In 2019, the company decided to discontinue our annual show and relinquish the “Victoria’s Secret Angel” title. This move came as a response to the growing criticism that the brand was lacking in representation, particularly regarding diverse body types and cultural backgrounds. As a devoted follower, I believe this change reflects a commitment to embracing and celebrating all women.

In a 2020 article published in The New York Times, there were claims made against the former Chief Marketing Officer, Ed Razek, regarding behavior that involved misogyny, mistreatment, and unwelcome advances – which are often considered unacceptable actions such as disrespect towards women and intimidation.

It also listed concerns about L Brands Chief Executive Leslie Wexner’s long friendship with convicted felon Jeffrey Epstein prior to his death in jail.

Epstein was awaiting trial on charging of sex trafficking minors at the time of his death.

2022’s Hulu documentary titled “Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons” kept scrutinizing the company culture of the lingerie brand. (Paraphrased)

The three-part analysis highlighted allegations of self-degradation, sexism, and unease, suggesting that the PINK line, marketed towards young girls aged 10-19, may have negatively impacted their self-image.

Victoria’s Secret was separated from the parent company in 2021.

It’s aiming to reestablish its prestige and stronghold in the profitable lingerie market once again.

They currently showcase models from diverse backgrounds and statures, much like the Savage X Fenty campaigns and shows led by innovator Rihanna.
