Disney is moving forward again with a live-action remake of *Tangled*, after pausing development earlier this year. Sources say Scarlett Johansson is being considered to play the villain Mother Gothel, a character originally voiced by Donna Murphy in the 2010 animated movie (according to *Deadline*).
Although the actors haven’t been officially announced for the roles of Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, many fans are hoping Sabrina Carpenter and Taylor Zakhar Perez will get the parts. This comes after models Gigi Hadid and Corey Mylchreest revealed they auditioned for the film.
Michael Gracey, known for directing the hit films *The Greatest Showman* (2017) and *Better Man* (2024), will direct the project.

Disney has officially approved the production of *Tangled*, according to *Deadline*. After the poor performance of *Snow White* in March—which failed to make money at the box office—Disney temporarily halted the project earlier this year.
Despite some criticism, the live-action remake of *Lilo & Stitch* earned $341.7 million globally during its opening weekend in May, suggesting continued audience interest in Disney’s live-action remakes, and showing a trend where different generations enjoy these updated versions.

As a huge Disney fan, I’ve noticed something really interesting. While classics like the original *Snow White* and *Dumbo* did well, they didn’t come close to the box office numbers of the recent live-action remakes like *Aladdin*, *Beauty and the Beast*, and *The Lion King* – all of which made over a billion dollars! It really seems like people are more excited about seeing updated versions of the Disney movies they grew up with in the ’90s, the ones that still feel fresh and important today.
While *Lilo & Stitch* came out more recently, in 2002, it’s likely that people who grew up with it consider it a Disney classic. Because of that connection, they might be more interested in seeing the remake.

Here in the US, most viewers – 79% – are under 35 years old, according to Deadline.
Since *Tangled* came out only 15 years ago, a new take on the story could be very successful with both critics and audiences, especially those from Gen Z and Millennial generations – which is exactly what Disney is counting on.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, known for her work on films like *Thor: Love and Thunder* (2022) and the upcoming *I Know What You Did Last Summer* (2025), wrote the screenplay, though specific details about the project haven’t been released yet.
Disney’s Tangled remake is yet to receive an official release date.
