The Real Reason Reed Richards Won’t Be the Avengers’ New Leader

For the vacant position at the head of the Avengers team in “Avengers: Doomsday”, fans are pondering if Pedro Pascal’s character, Reed Richards, might take charge of the revamped superhero squad. Given that Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, has occasionally led the Avengers in Marvel comics, this scenario seems plausible.

Previously, the Avengers team was often headed by Iron Man (portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.) or Captain America (played by Chris Evans). With these characters no longer available, a new character might assume leadership. However, in a conversation with the Associated Press, Pascal has refuted this possibility, stating, “It’s not necessarily part of my character’s future.” Given that Fantastic Four: First Steps is now playing in cinemas, it becomes clear why Reed would not be taking the lead for the Avengers.

Why Reed Richards Shouldn’t Lead the MCU Avengers

In contrast to the comic book character of Reed Richards in the MCU, portrayed by Pascal, there’s a unique feel. This version of Reed is noticeably warmer and more charming compared to the original. He clearly demonstrates affection for his family, despite occasional social awkwardness.

He’s plagued by anxiety and troubling ideas, and he admits this to his wife, Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby). He explains that his role is to envision the most catastrophic outcomes so he can find solutions in advance if they ever occur. His dark contemplations are evident when he suggests, albeit dismissively, that he’s pondered—and rejected—the idea of using their son Franklin as a negotiating tool against Galactus.

As a devoted admirer, I must say that Mister Fantastic is nothing short of extraordinary, yet there’s a challenge when it comes to inspiring others. Ever since he established this incredible team, he’s been its public face. However, orating and rallying spirits isn’t his forte.

When questioned to offer a soothing message to the globe, he tends to escalate tensions instead, causing widespread alarm. Honesty is his policy; he doesn’t sugarcoat the truth to maintain harmony. He isn’t the type of leader who can inspire and boost morale when the situation seems dire.

In simpler terms, despite being part of a superhero team, the Fantastic Four operates more like a family, with no single member taking charge. Reed Richards serves as their planner and idea generator, but he doesn’t call the shots or dictate actions to the rest of the team. Instead, everyone contributes equally to keep their family running smoothly.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the character portraying Reed is a multidimensional and impressive take on Mister Fantastic. However, he might not be suitable for leading the Avengers. The subtle hints in “First Steps” could foreshadow the exploration of a darker, possibly villainous side of Reed, reminiscent of his character from the Ultimate Universe comic book timeline, who is famously known as the Maker.

Inside sources at Marvel confirm that Chris Hemsworth’s character, Thor, is set to take control. This decision seems logical given that several key characters from the primary timeline are familiar with Thor.

Originally, the character was more focused on himself, but over time, he’s evolved into a skilled battle veteran who cares not just for himself, but also for his comrades. This transformation opens up opportunities for Reed to be the intellectual force behind the Avengers. His genius could lead them to unexplored and intriguing destinations.
