‘The Raid’s Iko Uwais to Lead New Action Thriller ‘Warrior’

Iko Uwais, a tremendously talented martial artist and one of today’s most overlooked action heroes, is starring in another straightforward, action-packed thriller. Though famous for the critically acclaimed films The Raid and The Raid 2, Uwais deserves wider recognition. In his latest role, he plays a man with a shadowy past who is reluctantly pulled back into a life of action when dangerous enemies threaten him.

Iko Uwais first gained recognition in the action genre with the film Merantau, directed by Gareth Evans. This movie showcased his martial arts skills as a young man leaving his peaceful village for the excitement of Jakarta. Uwais and Evans then achieved widespread success with The Raid in 2011 and its sequel in 2014. Since then, Evans directed Tom Hardy in Netflix’s Havoc, while Uwais has been searching for the right roles in Hollywood.

Despite appearing in big movies like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mile 22, Snake Eyes, and Expend4bles, Iko Uwais hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves. Luckily, Indonesian films like The Night Comes for Us and Headshot have showcased his incredible martial arts skills, and he’ll do so again in his new film, Warrior.

The movie centers on a highly skilled martial artist, formerly known for his Silat expertise, who is released from prison wanting a peaceful life. However, his hopes are dashed when a powerful Malaysian crime gang takes over his neighborhood, threatening everyone he cares about. Forced to confront his past, he becomes the only one standing between the syndicate and the community they’re trying to dominate. What begins as simple intimidation quickly escalates into a full-blown war, fought throughout the bustling markets, hidden alleys, and rooftops of Jakarta.

The film Warrior brings Iko Uwais back together with director John Radel, who worked with Uwais on The Night Comes for Us. Radel is making his directorial debut after a career as a cinematographer and producer on films like Michael Mann’s Blackhat and the recent Monkey Man. He’s also producing the upcoming Skyline: Warpath, starring Uwais and Scott Adkins. Uwais himself has several other action projects coming up, including the American films MRI and Road House 2, and he’s also set to direct his first film, the action-war movie Timur.
