The Project ‘set to be AXED’ as Network Ten prepares to launch new current affairs show to take its place
It seems like The Project’s time has come to an end after years of declining ratings, as recent reports suggest that Network Ten is planning to cancel their long-running current affairs program.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement when I hear whispers of a fresh current affairs show brewing behind the scenes, ready to take over The Project’s spot! Insiders have spilled the beans to TV Blackbox about this upcoming revolution, with an impressive format makeover already underway.
Instead of running every day like its previous version, the newly announced program is said to broadcast just four days a week, specifically from Monday to Thursday. Essentially, it seems they’re eliminating the underperforming Friday night broadcast.
On Sundays, it appears that the broadcast of The Project, which has been airing since 2017, might get canceled. This move could create a conspicuous void in Network Ten’s evening programming schedule.
Information indicates that a stealthy preparation process is underway, aiming for a potential launch of the replacement program sometime in July or August.

The change is quite noticeable, not just in terms of the show’s mood but also its duration. In contrast to The Project’s weekly live broadcast of six hours, the new series will only last 30 minutes per episode.
This significant reduction in Ten’s prime-time programming has sparked doubts about their strategy for filling the extra broadcast time. Some are wondering if the funds saved from ending the series, which is now handled by Roving Enterprises, will be used to invest in other areas instead.
It comes amid a significant reshuffle at the network.
Previously, Daily Mail Australia reported that the network Ten has hired multiple well-known journalists from Channel Seven, such as Denham Hitchcock, a seasoned reporter, Bill Hogan from 7News Sydney, and Amelia Brace, an award-winning foreign correspondent. They will be leading Ten’s upcoming investigative team.
Hitchcock confirmed the news on Instagram earlier this week, calling it a full-circle moment.
Indeed, let us proceed. I have changed my focus, but there is a sense of returning to where I started,” Hitchcock initiated.
As a child, I always looked forward to evenings because that’s when I would tune into Channel Ten News to watch my dad. My bunk bed was adorned with Eyewitness News stickers, and to this day, I can still hum the theme song by heart.
He expressed: “I’m thrilled to begin my duties here today – I’m excited to connect with this community as we move forward together on our future projects.

Additionally, he posted an old picture of his father, the renowned journalist Kevin Hitchcock from the 80s, sporting a stylish mustache. He humorously captioned it, “I’m not certain I could rock that look now, but there’s always room for improvement.
The action was taken mere days following news reports in The Australian, indicating that Hitchcock, together with Bill Hogan of 7News Sydney and the esteemed, award-winning journalist Amelia Brace, had all stepped down from Seven and joined Ten instead.
The three are thought to have agreed to host a fresh news talk show, which is supported by Ten News’ chief, Martin White.
Immediately following their resignation from Seven’s Sydney newsroom, Brace and Hitchcock commenced employment with Ten on the following Monday. It’s anticipated that Hogan will begin his new role there in about three weeks.
Speculation arises that Ten may be planning to debut a news magazine program during primetime, aiming to compete against the established shows such as Nine’s 60 Minutes, Seven’s Spotlight, and ABC’s Four Corners.
According to industry insiders, the upcoming initiative is geared towards in-depth investigative journalism pieces, and they are presently gathering a highly skilled group of journalists and producers, often referred to as a top-notch team.
The representative from Channel 10 affirmed the changes to Daily Mail Australia, stating: “Given the ongoing expansion and achievement of our news channel, 10 News, we’re increasing our investment in a dedicated investigative team who will focus on in-depth reporting.
For Hitchcock, this transition occurs approximately three months subsequent to rejoining Seven, after taking a hiatus from television journalism to reside aboard a catamaran with his wife Mari and their offspring.

In 2019, he was instrumental in initiating the launch of the news program called Spotlight. Since then, he has been spearheading the network’s investigations into significant crime and current events, such as the “Who Killed Marea?” documentary that aired on Sky News last year.
Regardless of his brief stint at Seven, Hitchcock seems eager to re-immersse himself in in-depth news coverage at Ten, inviting viewers to share news tips with him.
He encourages those continually sharing stories for him to examine, “Don’t stop now! Continue sending them.” He assured them that each message he receives gets his full attention, “I make sure to read every one of them.
Ten’s new current affairs program is expected to launch later this year.
Hitchcock leaves again just three months following his return to Seven, after spending a few years living on a catamaran with his small family.
He returned and posted on social media, “I’m here again! Time to rinse off some of that salt and get back to my specialty.
Network 10 has been approached for comment.
