The Project former co-host Lisa Wilkinson breaks her silence on shock cancellation

The Project former co-host Lisa Wilkinson has broken her silence on the show’s shock cancellation.

The seasoned TV host, who was part of the Channel Ten discussion group from 2018 to 2022 at age 65, has just posted a cherished collection of nostalgic photos from her tenure on the show on various social platforms.

In a single shot, Lisa was all smiles as she stood with her past colleagues, namely Carrie Bickmore, Waleed Aly, and Peter Helliar, on the filming stage.

Or, more casually:

A photo snapped them all together – Lisa and her ex-castmates like Carrie Bickmore, Waleed Aly, and Peter Helliar, grinning away on set.

Additionally, it was observed that Lisa was enjoying herself in the company of numerous high-profile attendees from the show, such as Magda Szubanski, Tommy Little, Brian Littrell, and Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys.

She captioned the gallery with some heartbreaking words.

Lisa started by saying, “The Project has come to an end. It was filled with numerous gifted individuals, countless moments of laughter, and a multitude of significant tales – some that might not have been shared if not for this project.

“Being a part of everything was an absolute delight and honor for me. A special thanks goes out to the entire team, especially those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. The audience played a crucial role too; collectively, we made the show truly vibrant.

It comes after The Project was officially axed this week and will air its final episode on June 27.

On a Monday update, Network 10 took to Facebook to express gratitude towards their viewers and unveil the new series that will replace the current one.

Waleed Aly, Sarah Harris, and Hamish Macdonald are rumored to be leaving the network, while Sam Taunton is said to carry on making guest appearances on other Ten programs.

In the meantime, one of the previous cast members, Peter Helliar, has disclosed the emotional impact that the unexpected dismissal had not just on him but also on his fellow colleagues.

On Tuesday, the longtime host, who shared duties on Nova’s Jase and Lauren between 2014 and 2022, confessed his deep sadness upon learning about the show’s termination.

He expressed deep sadness. Remarkably, that series left a tremendous impact, lasting for sixteen years. Few shows manage to make it past the first season. He likened it to the small steam engine in the children’s story that kept going against all odds.

Initially, it was facing cancellation nearly every other week during its debut year. Yet, 16 years on, it’s remarkable to witness the participants as familiar faces in households, having graced that same show!

In 2022, when Helliar left the program, he expressed his belief that his departure would create a significant void on Australian television, much like the departures of Carrie Bickmore, Tommy Little, and Lisa.

I believe people may not fully comprehend what they’re giving up currently. Over the years, countless comedians, musicians, and filmmakers have told me that The Project was instrumental in helping them sell tickets. That influence is now absent.

He mentioned that quite a few of his ex-Project team members shared with him that they had a particularly challenging day when they learned about the news.

Since Bickmore vacated her hosting role towards the end of 2022, the ratings for the news show have been plummeting dramatically. To date, it has broadcast approximately 4,500 episodes, with the final episode set to air within the next three weeks.

The Project initially debuted in July 2009, drawing over a million viewers in metro areas during its peak popularity. Its panel consisted of well-known figures such as Aly, Harris, Tunny, Hamish Macdonald, Rove McManus, Taunton, and Susie Youssef who took turns appearing on it.

11 Logie Awards, among other honors, were won, with Aly and Bickmore each receiving a Gold Logie, which is viewer-decided.

In the last few years, viewership has been declining, and as recently as this month, it drew between 238,000 and 357,000 viewers across the country.
