Viewers of ‘The Pitt’ were surprised to learn that Taylor Dearden, who quickly became a fan favorite, is actually the daughter of Bryan Cranston.

Thirty-two-year-old actress Dearden plays Dr. Melissa King, often called Mel, and appears with Noah Wyle in the popular and award-winning HBO medical drama.

People were surprised to learn she’s the daughter of the actor from Malcolm in the Middle, who is 70 years old.

Someone commented that she’s their favorite performer on Pitt Street and that her talent clearly comes from her family. They added a message of enthusiastic praise, including heart and applause emojis.

Others were flabbergasted that Dearden did not use her father’s last name professionally.

Dearden has decided to pursue an acting career on her own terms, wanting to succeed based on her own talent and avoid any perception of receiving special treatment because of her father’s fame.

Bryan Cranston has been married to Robin Dearden since 1989. Their daughter, Taylor Dearden, is an actress who uses her mother’s maiden name professionally. She is their only child.

People have often asked Bryan Cranston about his daughter’s successful acting career, and he’s always responded with obvious pride.

Bryan Cranston told the Associated Press at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival that he couldn’t be more proud, and both he and the actor’s mother were thrilled with her performance.

Cranston continued to praise his rising star daughter.

He said: ‘She’s a very hard-working person. She grew up in it, so it’s in her bones.

‘She’s in it for the right reasons and she loves it.’

Taylor first appeared on screen as a child, playing a small role on her father’s popular TV show. However, she’s built her career independently since then.

She began her acting career with several short films before landing the role of McKenzie in the web series 10 Ways to Get Rejected. She also appeared in Sweet/Vicious and the Netflix hit American Vandal.

She recently appeared in two Apple TV+ shows: For All Mankind and The Last Thing She Told Me.

Taylor shared in a May 2025 interview with Gold Derby that it felt very strange to be filming the show The Pitt while episodes were already being released, as this isn’t common for most streaming series.

It used to drive me crazy getting texts about something that had already happened – people would mention it like it was current news, and I’d be stuck at work thinking, ‘Wait, no, that’s not right, I actually handled something different!’ It was always a bit frustrating to have to clarify.

The actress plays a resident doctor who is neurodivergent, and she herself is also neurodivergent. She’s always felt bothered by how these types of characters are typically depicted on screen.

Dearden said they watched a certain show and were disappointed to see autism portrayed negatively and inaccurately.

She explained that what she finds frustrating is the tendency to portray characters as robotic rather than as complex people with real lives. She hopes she’s succeeding in creating more nuanced characters, avoiding that one-dimensional approach.

The season two finale of The Pitt will be available to watch on HBO and HBO Max this Thursday at 8pm.
