‘The Pitt’ edges out ‘Severance’ for best drama Emmy in night filled with upsets

The new HBO Max drama “The Pitt,” which follows a single day in a Pittsburgh emergency room, took home the award for best drama series at the 77th Emmy Awards on Sunday.

Few expected the medical drama to win, especially with Apple TV+’s “Severance” considered the frontrunner. However, it surprised everyone by taking the prize, beating out popular shows like “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus,” “Andor,” “The Diplomat,” and “Slow Horses.”

As a big fan of the show, it was really touching to hear that the creator, R. Scott Gemmill, immediately dedicated their win to all the healthcare workers, frontline staff, and first responders – a truly fitting tribute to those heroes.

Awards

‘The Studio’ and Tramell Tillman both achieved a first for the Emmys, while Stephen Colbert secured a win despite uncertainty about the future of his show. ‘Adolescence’ was also a big winner, receiving numerous awards.

“Respect them, protect them, trust them,” he said in his acceptance speech.

The first season of the show featured 15 intense episodes, each following a demanding 15-hour shift in a hospital emergency room. It aimed to realistically depict the difficulties faced by healthcare professionals. The series marked a return to medical dramas for Noah Wyle, the star and executive producer, who hadn’t played a doctor since his role as Dr. John Carter in the long-running show “ER” 15 years prior. He also worked again with “ER” producers John Wells and Gemmill, who served as showrunner.

Entertainment & Arts

Noah Wyle received his first Emmy Award for playing Dr. Michael ‘Robby’ Robinavitch in the HBO Max series ‘The Pitt’.

Before it even aired, the new series “The Pitt” faced a lawsuit. The estate of Michael Crichton, who created the show “ER,” claimed it was an unauthorized continuation of the original medical drama. Warner Bros., the studio behind “The Pitt,” countered that it wasn’t based on “ER.” The legal dispute is still ongoing.

The first season of “The Pitt” was a big hit with Emmy voters, earning 13 nominations and ultimately winning five awards. Among the winners were star actor Wyle and supporting actress Katherine LaNasa.

“The Pitt” will return for a second season in January 2026.
