Season 3 of The Pitt is in the works, with Dr. Robby and Dr. Langdon set to return. However, creator R. Scott Gemmill didn’t mention a certain key character when discussing who will be back next season. Star Noah Wyle has described the show as having a constantly changing cast – a ‘revolving door’ – with characters appearing and leaving as the story requires. This approach was evident in Season 2 when Dr. Collins wasn’t brought back due to a planned change in the character’s storyline.
The show The Pitt realistically portrays the fast-paced world of emergency medicine. Like a real teaching hospital, the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center sees staff members come and go as they finish their training and pursue new opportunities.
R. Scott Gemmill, creator of The Pitt, recently told TV Line that most of the show’s main doctors – including Langdon, McKay, King, Santos, and Whitaker – will return for Season 3. He confirmed they’ll “pretty much” all be back in the ED next season.
Given that the show isn’t fast-forwarding a year into the future, will the main characters – Langdon, McKay, Mel, Santos, and Whitaker – still be working in the emergency department?
R. Scott Gemmill: “Pretty much, yep.”
Gemmill also stated that because Javadi is focusing on emergency psychiatry, she will be working in the Emergency Department for the near future.
Every Confirmed Character Returning In The Pitt Season 3
Dr. Robby

In Season 2 of The Pitt, Dr. Robby’s mental health noticeably declines, causing worry among his friends and coworkers as he prepares for a three-month leave of absence.
Honestly, seeing Robby at the end of the season felt really hopeful. He had some tough but necessary talks with Dr. Abbott and Dr. Langdon, and it seemed like those conversations finally made him confront what he was going through. It was like he started to choose life, even with all the turmoil inside him, especially as he wrapped up his last shift before taking some much-needed time off. It felt like a turning point for him.
Dr. Robby’s return in The Pitt Season 3 feels natural, given his role as the show’s main emotional center and the ongoing focus on mental health themes.
Dr. Frank Langdon

In Season 2, Dr. Frank Langdon (played by Patrick Ball) came back to the hospital’s Emergency Department. He’d been fired by Dr. Robby in Season 1 after being caught taking medication from a patient.
Langdon worked hard to turn his life around, getting help through rehab and repairing relationships with those around him.
As someone who really gets invested in characters, the scene between Langdon and Robby in the finale just hit different – knowing they used to be best friends added so much tension. I’m really hoping we see more of that complicated relationship in Season 3. Plus, I’m fascinated by Langdon’s journey. Season 2 made it clear he’s still got a long way to go before he truly finds redemption, and I’m eager to see how that plays out. It feels like there’s a lot more drama to explore with his recovery.
Dr. Mel King

In Season 2 of The Pitt, Dr. Mel King faced serious difficulties due to a legal deposition related to a medical procedure she performed in the previous season. The season finale revealed that this deposition is still ongoing, and the pressure from it could cause her significant problems in the next season.
I’m really excited to see how Mel and Becca’s relationship develops in Season 3! Their interactions were so strained last season, and I’m hoping we’ll get to understand what’s going on between them and see if they can work things out. I think exploring their dynamic will be a big part of the new season.
It remains to be seen if Mel will be able to support her sister’s independence as she pursues her own career goals at the PTMC.
Dr. Cassie McKay

Dr. McKay continues to be a relatable and effective doctor in Season 2 of The Pitt, showing genuine care for her patients and striving for a healthy balance between her professional and personal life.
McKay faced the difficult task of supporting a patient, Roxie, who was nearing the end of her life with advanced lung cancer. At the same time, he needed to gently coach a medical student, Dr. Ogilvie, to show more compassion to patients with challenging conditions.
Fans are excited about McKay’s return in Season 3 of The Pitt because she provides a sense of calm and stability during turbulent times.
Dr. Trinity Santos

Dr. Santos is still dealing with the fallout from revealing Dr. Langdon stole medications last season. Although she did the right thing, it was also revealed that some of her colleagues have avoided and ostracized her over the past year, making her feel alone and unfairly blamed.
The show also explored Santos’ struggles with anger and keeping accurate patient charts. Now that she’s returning for a third season, it will be interesting to watch her develop – both by overcoming her exhaustion and by becoming a more dependable doctor in the emergency department.
Dr. Dennis Whitaker

In Season 2 of The Pitt, Dr. Dennis Whitaker truly came into his own. He earned a promotion to a fully licensed doctor, complete with an official ID badge, and continued to apply the valuable lesson he learned from Dr. Robby: always treat patients with respect and recognize their humanity, even in death.
Fans can expect Whitaker to keep developing in the next season. His positive relationship with Dr. Ogilvie showed his ability to mentor, and this suggests he’ll likely take on a similar role with the new group of student interns.
Dr. Victoria Javadi

In the first two seasons of The Pitt, the main character was shaped by Dr. Javadi’s struggles to figure out her career path and deal with her parents’ expectations.
In the Season 2 finale, Javadi’s conversation with Dr. Robby strongly suggested she’s committed to a career in emergency psychiatry, indicating she plans to remain working in the Emergency Department long-term.
This is a significant moment for the character, allowing her to demonstrate to her critical parents that she’s capable of making the right choices for her own life.
Emma Nolan

In Season 2 of The Pitt, a new nurse named Emma Nolan joins the day shift and begins training under charge nurse Dana. Emma’s first day was eventful – she witnessed a patient pass away and was unfortunately attacked by another patient. (You can find more details about the aftermath of the attack here.)
Even after everything she’s been through, Emma’s comeback suggests Season 3 will show how she’s developed from an inexperienced nurse into a more composed and skilled professional.
Dr. Ellis

In Season 3 of The Pitt, Dr. Ellis, a doctor who usually works the night shift, will move to the day shift, providing much-needed support to the busy Emergency Department.
Throughout both seasons of The Pitt, Ellis has consistently demonstrated a cool head in stressful situations, making her an ideal doctor for the day shift.
It will be interesting to observe how Dr. Ellis handles the problems some of the daytime doctors are facing, particularly after successfully working on the night shift with Dr. Abbott, which ran so smoothly as a team.
Who Is Not Returning In The Pitt Season 3?

Dr. Mohan won’t be returning for Season 3 of The Pitt. This decision was made to move the story forward and highlight the show’s focus on the constantly changing staff at the teaching hospital.
Okay, a lot of fans are already upset about what’s happening with Dr. Mohan, but honestly, Season 2 of The Pitt kind of prepared me for this. It seemed like she was starting to think her style of careful, slow progress just wasn’t working in the fast-paced, super intense environment of the ER. It felt like she was considering switching to something like geriatrics where she could really take her time with patients. So while it’s still disappointing, it didn’t come completely out of left field.
Even after Season 3, there’s potential for Mohan to return in future seasons, perhaps as a guest star or even another patient. The writers could explore many different storylines with her character, even if she’s no longer working as an emergency room doctor.
Which Characters Are Still Unclear to Return In The Pitt Season 3?
Dr. Al-Hashimi

Season 2 of The Pitt revealed the heartbreaking reason behind Dr. Al-Hashimi’s struggles: she experiences absence seizures. These seizures raise serious concerns about her ability to safely work as a doctor in the Emergency Department, potentially endangering both patients and colleagues.
Whether Al-Hashimi will return in Season 3 of The Pitt is still up in the air, as Dr. Robby has threatened to expose her medical condition if she doesn’t reveal it. According to The Pitt creator R. Scott Gemmill, Al-Hashimi needs to decide what she wants to do with her career as a doctor.
She needs to determine how she can keep practicing medicine and if there’s a straightforward way to do so.
Dana

Dana wasn’t initially listed as returning for Season 3 of The Pitt, but she’s still likely to appear. The show’s creator, R. Scott Gemmill, indicated she’s part of the main group of characters who will be featured.
Dana is a close friend of Dr. Robby and the lead nurse during the busy day shifts in the Emergency Department, so it’s understandable why her return is important to viewers.
Dr. Jack Abbott

Even though Dr. Abbott works the night shift, he still plays an important part in Season 2 of The Pitt. He’s the one who helps Robby overcome his struggles and begin to deal with his mental health issues.
Abbott’s return in Season 3 feels natural because he uniquely understands Robby, even without saying much. Plus, he offers a straightforward, practical perspective that the PTMC really needs.
Ogilvie

I recently heard from R. Scott Gemmill, the creator of The Pitt, and he wasn’t giving much away about the future of Ogilvie and Joy. When I asked if we’d see those student doctors back for Season 3, he admitted it was really up in the air – he just doesn’t know yet!
It’s likely Ogilvie won’t be back for Season 3. His story felt complete after the second season, as we already saw a full transformation from a confident student to a more grounded doctor.
Joy

In Season 2 of The Pitt, Joy unexpectedly stepped up as a key player during the cyberattack response. She became essential for recalling crucial details from the digital board as the situation intensified.
Joy consistently leaves work right at 6:00 p.m., demonstrating a healthy work-life balance that others should strive for to protect their well-being. She’s a natural at her job in the emergency room, and fans hope to see her character return to the PTMC for more shifts.
