The Perfect Couple episode 6 is unsurprisingly underwhelming (Review)

As a lifelong fan of gripping murder mysteries and a seasoned viewer of countless Netflix series, I must confess that my expectations for “The Perfect Couple” were sky-high. Alas, the finale left me with a sense of disillusionment that can only be compared to discovering an empty candy jar on Halloween night.

We’ve finally reached the end of The Perfect Couple with episode 6, and honestly I’m glad to be here. I had higher hopes for this Netflix series with the star-studded cast. But unfortunately, this murder mystery was not executed well overall. Here’s our review of “That Feels Better.” SPOILERS BELOW.

Sure thing!

The only nice part about this was when Greer just couldn’t hold it together anymore and told her kids about her past. That was pretty hilarious and their reactions were on point. Otherwise, I’m ignoring this part of the story because it has nothing to do with the overall picture. The show then tries to point us in Thomas’ direction. He is a wild card after all. But alas, he is not the killer either.

In the novel “The Perfect Couple,” it turns out that Abby is the one who killed Merrit. To be honest, I’m not completely shocked by this twist. If I had to guess beforehand, she wouldn’t have been my first choice. However, upon reflection, there were subtle signs pointing towards her. She was always discussing expensive and exclusive items, suggesting a preoccupation with money that could potentially lead to murder as a means to maintain her lifestyle. So while it’s not the most unexpected revelation, I can see how her motive might have been rooted in her obsession with wealth.

With Thomas being virtually penniless, indebted to Isabel by approximately $2 million, she urgently requires the trust fund to become active when Will turns 18 in a matter of weeks. The prospect of waiting another 18 years if Merritt and Tag were to have a child is unimaginable. I find the show’s flaw lies in its lack of exploration into Abby’s reasons and mental process behind her actions.

Following the detailed flashback about the murder night, it felt like there wasn’t enough focus on the moment when Abby was ultimately unveiled. It’s intriguing to wonder if she desired the trust fund money to maintain her luxurious lifestyle, perhaps also for the sake of her and Thomas’ upcoming child, or a mix of both. This aspect left me wanting more insight from the show. I felt it needed further exploration.

Initially, I didn’t anticipate Amelia would seek revenge or anything similar. Instead, her response was surprisingly subdued when she discovered the identity of her friend’s murderer. Fast-forwarding to the puzzling scene six months later, Greer had written a book about Amelia. Frankly, apart from Greer and Merritt, none of the other characters were engaging or intriguing.

In a more engaging manner, let me rephrase: Amelia’s NDA agreement didn’t lead to any intriguing consequences in the narrative. Imagine if she discovered crucial information but was bound by her contract from revealing it to authorities. This could have led to an exciting plot twist as she attempted to find alternative ways to share the information. However, the story seemed to lack resolution on several key points that were initially introduced.

Summing up, the sixth episode of “The Perfect Couple” received a grade C overall from me. Regarding the murder mystery, I found enjoyable moments but I’m afraid it isn’t something I would rewatch. Investing six hours into this show feels unnecessary when you could just watch the beginning and end to grasp the storyline. I was looking forward to the series, but I’m disheartened because it didn’t live up to my expectations. It had potential for improvement, but alas. What can we do? What were your thoughts on the finale and the series as a whole?

All 6 episodes of The Perfect Couple are now streaming on Netflix.
