The Perfect Couple episode 5 recap: The book launch from hell

As a seasoned gamer of the mystery genre, I must say that “The Perfect Couple” episode 5 was a rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue. Tag’s calm demeanor at the police station, despite his affair and Meritt’s untimely death, seems a bit too casual for my taste, but then again, I’ve seen enough characters in games to know that appearances can be deceiving.

Spoilers ahead for The Perfect Couple episode 5.

In the police station, Tag (played by Liev Schreiber) seems unusually composed, which might suggest innocence, don’t you think? He responds to every query from Chief Carter (Michael Beach) and Detective Henry (Donna Lynne Champlin), showing a bit of attitude but still being cooperative. His haste is due to his eagerness to attend Greer’s book launch party. However, it seems callous given the circumstances; he had an extended affair with Meritt (Meghann Fahy), she was carrying his child, and yet here he appears unphased by her death. Let’s revisit the highlights of episode 4!

Tag admits to the affair, he tells Chief Carter that he was, indeed, with Meritt late after the party. And Tag also tells Carter and Henry that he and Meritt got into a fight. But he insists that he did not kill her. Finally, Tag does think of a way to prove his innocence – his watch! Gotta love modern technology.

As a devoted user of Tag’s smartwatch, I can attest to its impressive features – from tracking heart rate and steps to monitoring sleep patterns. In a critical situation, Tag chose to share this valuable piece of technology with the authorities. Indeed, it could potentially verify his stated time of going to bed, which was before Meritt met his unfortunate end.

After being declared free, Tag makes his way to Greer’s book launch following several drinks. Needless to say, he’s quite tipsy! Remember our tense dinner incident from before? Well, this boozy book launch might seem like a breeze in comparison, but it turns out to be even more uncomfortable! I believe it’s even worse! To start with, the individual Greer had been dodging shows up to disrupt the launch party. He’s swiftly escorted out by security.

Never fear, Tag steps up to clean up the situation. In a humiliating turn of events, Tag trips over his own feet in front of everyone present, after causing his wife embarrassment. And just like that, a parade begins! A marching band struts their stuff and balloons rain down, marking the grand finale of the book launch event. Incredible, right? But what does this mean for Greer and Tag? Did they play a part in Meritt’s murder? My gut feeling tells me no.

Hang on there. It turns out the fellow who attempted to gatecrash Greer’s gathering had lent him a substantial amount of money. That might explain why Greer has been evading his phone calls.
