The Perfect Couple episode 4 moves the story nowhere (Review)

As a seasoned gamer of both life and TV shows, I must say that “The Perfect Couple” episode 4 left me scratching my head more than solving any mysteries. The sudden revelation about Amelia and Shooter’s past connection felt like a forced plot twist, akin to trying to squeeze square pegs into round holes in an old-school video game.

In the fourth episode of “The Perfect Couple,” titled “Someone Could Get Hurt,” an unexpected and seemingly superfluous disclosure was introduced about Amelia and Shooter. With only two episodes left in the Netflix series, it’s anticipated that the identity of the real killer will be unveiled soon. This is my assumption, as murder mysteries typically save such shocking revelations for the finale. Here’s our review of this episode, but beware of spoilers below.

It seems Amelia and Shooter had an unexpected encounter in their past, and it appears this was a solitary instance. I find it puzzling why Amelia chose not to disclose to Shooter where they were acquainted. The background story doesn’t appear significant. Frankly, the series is attempting to convince me that a brief train ride and barely five hours later, they formed a strong bond between them. This seems implausible to me.

In an unexpected twist – or perhaps not so shocking given the colorful cast we’ve got here – it seemed like Shooter and Amelia were getting cozy, and there I was, watching Benji catch them in the act. It seems everyone on Nantucket is struggling to keep their romantic life in line. Frankly, I can’t help but wonder if this island has some kind of magnetic charm that’s causing these sudden connections, since it wasn’t even a hint at something like this in earlier episodes. To be honest, the Amelia and Shooter romance feels like it appeared from thin air, leaving me questioning the writers’ intentions.

In the series “The Perfect Couple”, they tend to tell instead of showing us viewers, which leaves me puzzled as to why they occasionally drop hints about characters knowing about an affair without providing an explanation. For instance, in episode 4, Amelia asks Benji when he learned about Tag and Merritt’s relationship. We witness the moment Benji finds out, but I’m wondering how Amelia came to suspect that Benji was already aware. There seems to have been no previous discussions or indications of this knowledge.

In my opinion, what stood out most in the latest episode is the captivating portrayal of Nicole Kidman’s character, Greer. When she receives Merritt’s gold bracelet as a gift, she cleverly manipulates the situation to implicate him for murder, growing tired of his antics. Although her actions were drastic, they were certainly understandable given her motives. Bravo, Greer! However, let me clarify that I do not advocate such behavior in real life; it’s purely the fictional world where we can appreciate this kind of drama.

Though I doubt it’s actually Tag or even Greer who are behind Merritt’s murder. That would just be too easy. Overall I thought the fourth episode was weak. We didn’t really learn anything new except it was confirmed Will had nothing to do with Merritt’s murder. But we already guessed that already. It was pretty obvious it wasn’t going to be him. The story didn’t really go anywhere, and the writing has not made me invested in Benji and Amelia or Amelia and Shooter at all. Episode grade level: C.

All 6 episodes of The Perfect Couple are now streaming on Netflix.
