The Perfect Couple episode 1 recap: The top three questions after watching the premiere

As someone who’s been through more than a handful of mystery dramas, I must confess that I was quite excited about The Perfect Couple. With such a star-studded cast and Netflix’s reputation for delivering top-notch mystery shows, it seemed like the perfect storm. Alas, it didn’t quite live up to the hype, but hey, sometimes even the perfect couple has its imperfections!

Currently streaming on Netflix, you can catch “The Perfect Couple,” a gripping mystery drama. The story revolves around Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson), who is about to marry Benji (Billy Howle), a member of the most affluent family in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Appearing as the ideal couple, they seem destined to enhance the already admired and respected Winbury family. However, their picture-perfect life takes an unexpected turn when a wedding guest’s body is found on the beach. This grim discovery unveils shocking revelations and long-hidden secrets

Regarding outstanding reputations, Netflix has produced some top-notch mystery dramas in the industry. With a compelling cast featuring Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning, The Perfect Couple appeared poised to be Netflix’s next major success. However, it fails to meet expectations

The Perfect Couple may not be what fans of the genre were searching for, but it is enough to keep us watching so if you got through the first episode, let’s recap!

The opening episode showcases Benji and Amelia along with their delightful wedding attendees. A sumptuous rehearsal dinner filled with expensive champagne and oysters suggests that the Winburys are affluent. This wedding seems like one where celebrity magazines would buy exclusive rights for photographs. Immediately, questions arise: The Winbury family is wealthy, but could they be excessively so? And thus, our first mystery: Why does the Winbury family possess such great wealth?

This dream wedding turns into a nightmare when a dead body is found on the beach. Cancel the catering! Well, not that the Winbury’s need their money back, I’m sure they’ll be fine. But the wedding is called off due to this and everyone is a suspect, including one of the caterers. Dan Carter (Michael Beach) the chief of police jumps to the case, but not before informing his daughter, Chloe (Mia Isaac) that her catering job won’t be happening, after all. Chloe appears startled by the news, but we’re immediately suspicious when we see her hide bloody clothing as soon as her dad is out of sight.

In a new perspective, the narrative unfolds with Chief Carter commuting to work, questioning individuals ranging from the housekeeper to the soon-to-be bride, Amelia. The captivating series titled The Perfect Couple delves into the morning preceding the events, offering a more authentic glimpse of Amelia and the Winbury family. While Amelia appears kind and humble, she doesn’t seem to hold favor with her future mother-in-law, Greer, portrayed by Nicole Kidman. Despite this, it is crucial to remember that she might not be entirely innocent; we must continue observing everyone closely

When jewelry-maker Carol delivers the rings, she inquires if Greer appreciated the bracelet that Tag (Liev Schreiber), her husband, chose specifically for her. Carol assumed Greer would be wearing it at their special event. However, Greer is unaware of the bracelet Carol mentioned and doesn’t want to reveal this ignorance. Instead, Greer thanks Carol for her thoughtfulness, and now we have our second mystery: Is Tag being unfaithful to Greer?

The genuine feelings of the family start to emerge. Thomas, Benji’s elder brother played by Jack Reynor, is discontented in his marriage with Abby (Dakota Fanning). Thomas appears envious towards Benji but playfully mocks him regarding Amelia’s close relationship with her long-time friend Meritt. The bond between Amelia and Meritt is strong, making it all the more poignant that it was Amelia who discovered Meritt’s lifeless body on the beach, adding a heartbreaking layer to this already sad situation

Top mystery: Who killed Meritt?

All six episodes of the limited series The Perfect Couple are now streaming on Netflix.
