The Perfect Couple ending explained: Who killed Merritt?

As a seasoned gamer with a knack for mystery and suspenseful shows, I found myself completely engrossed in the twisted web of secrets that unfolded in The Perfect Couple on Netflix. The six-episode series kept me guessing until the very end, and boy, was it worth the wait!

Over the span of six episodes, the show The Perfect Couple revealed long-held family mysteries. The most significant secret that unraveled was the identity of the person responsible for the murder.

In the initial episode, a beach unexpectedly appeared on Amelia and Benji’s wedding day. As a result, their nuptials were postponed while the police investigated a suspicious death. It wasn’t long before they discovered this incident was a murder, and there were numerous potential culprits to consider.

How was Merritt killed in The Perfect Couple?

At the climax, Greer disclosed to Amelia that Merritt had a lethal amount of barbiturates in her body at the time of her passing. It’s worth noting that Amelia’s mother had taken three barbiturate pills during their journey. But here’s the catch: when these three pills were consumed together, they could have been fatal. However, only one was absent, and by itself, that single pill wouldn’t have been lethal.

It would have, however, knocked someone out.

It seems that the pill found in Merritt wasn’t actually the one she had taken. Instead, Thomas was engaging in a game of chance with prescriptions, using the pill as a part of his collection for future use.

Abby retrieved the tablet, powdering it for inclusion in a beverage she offered to Merritt. Subsequently, Abby motivated Merritt to join her for a swim in the sea. As Merritt began to lose consciousness, Abby forcefully restrained her underwater, ultimately resulting in Merritt’s demise.

Why did Abby kill Merritt in The Perfect Couple?

Abby’s motivation is money. It’s always about money, right?

It wasn’t long before some individuals discovered that Merritt was expecting, and this posed an issue for Abby.

The trust fund established by Tag for his sons wouldn’t become accessible to any of them until the youngest Winbury kid reaches the age of 18. Since Will was about to turn 18, Abby could afford to wait for that. However, upon learning that Merritt was pregnant, Abby understood that she would have to wait 18 years before the trust fund is distributed to all the sons and the child Merritt carries as well.

The death is changed from The Perfect Couple by Elin Hildebrand

In the series, there were several alterations made to the book, and one such change was the murder. Interestingly, while Abby does end up killing Merritt in the original story, it’s not out of malice. It’s not related to money or a trust fund. Instead, the chosen victim aligns quite logically with the narrative.

In simpler terms, Abby intentionally slipped barbiturates to Featherington (Isabel in the show), intending to make her unconscious and prevent a romantic encounter with Thomas. Unfortunately, Merritt unintentionally ingested the crushed pill and subsequently drowned while swimming. While the series might have benefited from keeping that ending, Abby’s greed was consistently portrayed throughout, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

The Perfect Couple is available to stream on Netflix.
