The Perfect Couple cast wasn't happy with the idea of that dance sequence

As a seasoned gamer and TV enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that The Perfect Couple has certainly taken an unexpected turn. While dance numbers can be a delightful addition to a series, this one seems to have missed its mark. It’s reminiscent of those awkward school talent shows where the best intentions fall flat on their face.

Occasionally, offbeat dance sequences hit the mark; unfortunately, they miss it in the movie “The Perfect Couple”. We can do without watching the credits in this case.

Showrunner Samantha Bier opted for a style reminiscent of “Wednesday” for her series, “The Perfect Couple“. Recognizing dance sequences can generate significant buzz online, she aimed to incorporate one. Consequently, the catchy tune by Meghan Trainor, “Criminal“, was featured in the opening credits’ dance number.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always appreciated Bier’s intention to infuse fun into this series despite its somber themes. However, it seems the execution hasn’t been entirely successful, and I’m not alone in my thoughts – many viewers share the same sentiment. Interestingly, even the cast seemed hesitant about their involvement in the project.

There was nearly a mutiny in The Perfect Couple

As reported by Variety, it appears that the actors in the production maintained a WhatsApp group chat where they could discuss various aspects of the show, and naturally, the dance routine was one of the topics.

Meghann Fahy (the actress playing Merritt) confessed her struggle with choreography made her anxious, while Ishaan Khattar (portraying Scooter) mentioned that the cast found it hard to grasp the concept behind the dance scene, feeling it didn’t align well with the overall series.

As it transpires, the dance scene was initially planned for a dream sequence within Episode 5. However, this idea was abandoned and instead, it became the sequence played during the opening credits.

Among all cast members, it was only Live Schreiber who wholeheartedly embraced this endeavor. Interestingly, he wasn’t part of the WhatsApp group, which meant he wasn’t privy to what the others were discussing. However, he simply enjoys dancing, so he was diligently rehearsing the steps. It seems like he could make a great contestant on ‘Dancing with the Stars’!

Nicole Kidman eventually agreed to it, admitting that she initially had reservations because it didn’t align well with her character. However, since Greer wouldn’t dance, Kidman managed to find a way to dance in a manner that suited Greer, which ultimately worked for her. She now appreciates its inclusion, but this doesn’t necessarily mean she wholeheartedly supported the idea from the beginning.

Occasionally, dance sequences can be effective, and they seem to suit the eccentricities of “Wednesday” and “The Umbrella Academy”. However, “The Perfect Couple” seems a bit too incongruous for its narrative.

The Perfect Couple is available to stream on Netflix.
