The Perfect Couple cast protested against show’s dance sequence
As a seasoned gamer who has danced my way through numerous rhythm games and even attempted a few real-life choreographies (with varying degrees of success), I can’t help but feel a strange kinship with the cast of Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. The fact that these talented actors found themselves in a WhatsApp group, protesting against an opening dance sequence, resonates deeply with my own experiences.
The actors from the newest Netflix murder mystery, titled “The Perfect Couple,” have disclosed that they objected to the show’s initial dance scene.
The opening scene of the six-part series unfolds with everyone in the cast executing a synchronized dance routine to Meghan Trainor’s ‘Criminals’, right on the beach, as it focuses on a wealthy family who become suspects when a corpse is found close to their residence.
During an interview with Variety, director Susanne Bier emphasized her decision to maintain the regularity was driven by a desire to create something lively and enjoyable.
Nevertheless, the actors were reluctant and initiated a WhatsApp group with the aim of having the dance sequence removed.
According to Meghann Fahy, who portrays social media influencer Merritt, everyone in the group expressed their unwillingness to participate since they simply couldn’t grasp what was going on.
To be honest, I find learning choreography quite challenging, which made me feel quite apprehensive about it.
Ishaan Khattar, portraying the character Scooter, shared with the media outlet that none of them found it feasible to perform such choreography while staying true to their respective roles.
We’re wondering, ‘How does this fit into the bigger picture? This wasn’t what we were expecting for the task.’
At the beginning, Nicole Kidman was uncertain as well, since she thought that her role as Greer would merely observe the dance instead of participating in it.
However, she came around eventually, saying: “I think it’s great and I’m so glad they got us all to do it. ‘Cause there’s some joy in it.”
Liev Schrieber, who plays Greer’s husband Tag, was up for the dance from the very beginning.
He stated, “I didn’t receive that WhatsApp group message.” Instead, everyone else was involved in a dispute over an idea, but I was off rehearsing my dance steps in my trailer at that time.
I enjoy dancing, and I felt a bit let down when I found out I wasn’t involved as much as expected, since I believed I performed quite skillfully.
Regardless of the initial resistance, Fahy acknowledged that everyone became “extremely happy” with the sequence by the close of the day, stating further: “Ultimately, we all succumbed to it. It was incredibly enjoyable, and I strangely find myself thinking it’s fantastic.
The Perfect Couple is available on Netflix now.
