If you’ve been missing out on the charming BBC sitcom As Time Goes By starring Judi Dench, you can now watch all episodes! The complete series is currently streaming on U, listed under their ‘comfort viewing’ category.
The series, which ran from 1992 to 2005, centered on Jean Pargetter (played by Judi Dench), a widowed former nurse, and Lionel Hardcastle (Geoffrey Palmer), a retiree who returned to the UK after selling his Kenyan coffee farm.
They had a short romance in 1953, but then drifted apart. Both assumed the other wasn’t interested, so neither one made an effort to reconnect.

Lionel and Jean, who were once lovers, haven’t seen each other in 38 years. Fate brings them back together when Lionel hires a typist from Jean’s company to help him write his life story. Things get even more complicated – and funny – when Lionel unknowingly starts dating Jean’s daughter, Judith, leading to a series of romantic blunders.
The popular show As Time Goes By first appeared on BBC One and ran for nine seasons, plus two additional reunion episodes. You can now stream all 66 regular episodes on U’s free service – the special episodes aren’t included.
What to Read Next
Moira Booker plays Judith Hanson, Jean’s daughter and coworker, and Philip Bretherton is Alistair Deacon, Lionel’s charming publisher. The rest of the cast includes Jenny Funnell, Moyra Fraser, Paul Chapman, Joan Sims, and Tim Wylton.
I still absolutely love As Time Goes By, and it’s amazing to me that even though it finished years ago, so many people are discovering it now! What really gets me is how lovely the characters are, and the humour is so subtle and clever. Plus, the storylines are just genuinely heartwarming – it’s a feel-good show that always cheers me up.

I don’t recall exactly how I first met Jean, Lionel, and their family, and it’s not important. I really love being around them whenever I get the chance. I even treated myself to the complete DVD collection, including the reunion episodes, as a Christmas gift last year, one person shared.
People are really connecting with the characters, finding the conversations realistic and the overall atmosphere inviting. One viewer especially appreciated how much the characters genuinely care for each other, and also praised the actors’ performances.
