The Penguin finale explained: Did Oz Cobb get everything he dreamed of?

As a long-time fan of Gotham and its enigmatic characters, I have to say that this latest episode of The Penguin was nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. The storyline took unexpected turns, with Victor Aguilar’s demise being a particularly heart-wrenching moment.

Spoilers ahead of The Penguin finale

In this episode titled “A Great or Little Thing,” we find ourselves in an utterly gripping situation. It manages to be both intellectually stimulating and deeply unsettling at the same time. The narrative begins with Oz being forcibly taken to Monroe’s, where he encounters a confrontation with his mother, Francis, that he could hardly foresee. This entire scenario is triggered by Sofia.

Through the counseling sessions with Julian, Francis managed to remember the events following Jack and Benny’s demise, which added an unexpected turn to the tale Oz shared with Sofia about the night his mother chose life over being swallowed by her sorrow. If you were clinging onto the belief that Oz didn’t deliberately end his brothers’ lives…it appears that The Penguin has shattered that assumption.

It seems that Francis had a conversation with Rex Calibrisi, during which she revealed that she was aware Oz intentionally imprisoned his siblings in the shaft so he could have them all to himself. She wasn’t sure what to do about him. Rex suggested that she either mold him into the man she desired using his loyalty or let him go, which essentially meant allowing him to face potential danger or even death. The crime boss offered his assistance for the latter choice.

At first, Francis agreed, but after Oz passionately spoke about his intentions to provide everything for her, she reconsidered her plan to allow Rex to drive Oz home, ending his life. In the end, she deeply regretted this choice and acknowledged it when confronted, revealing that she knew of his actions because Julian threatened to cut her finger off and Oz allowed him in to maintain the illusion that she was unaware of what he had done.

In a fit of rage and dismay, discovering that her son was prepared to suffer harm instead of letting it come to her, Francis approached Oz, who was tied to a chair. She verbally berated him, calling him a failure, shattering a bottle of beer in the process, and using the broken shards to wound him. The strain of the situation made Francis imagine she saw Jack and Benny standing there, wet from head to toe. She apologized to them and then suffered a major stroke.

Does Francis Cobb die in The Penguin?

Overwhelmed by the threat to her life, Oz managed to escape from Monroe’s, carrying his mother on his back after breaking free from restraints and firing off shots. He hurriedly rushed her to the hospital, hoping against hope for her recovery, but it seemed unlikely. In the final moments of “A Great or Little Thing,” we discover that Francis has suffered a stroke, leaving her in a vegetative state. She had expressed to Oz that such an existence was not one she could endure. She desired a peaceful passing, but Oz, unwilling to let this happen, will do everything in his power to prevent it.

Although Oz can no longer hear his mother’s voice, and her parting words were filled with contempt, he continues to cherish Francis by their side. They’ve relocated to a deserted penthouse apartment, offering her a view of the Gotham skyline. However, the vow he made to her as a child feels empty since she’s confined within her mind, living in a sterile medical bed within an empty room. A tear trickled down Francis’ cheek as Oz shared that he had finally fulfilled her every wish.

Next, he trailed the music that Eve played. She donned Francis’ gown, her hair matched his mother’s color, and she warmly welcomed Oz in her arms as they danced together. Eve informed Sofia that she adapts to whatever her clients require, now assuming the role of Francis’ stand-in. She compliments Oz in a manner he desires and finds comforting.

As an ardent admirer, I ponder over how Oz achieved his dreams – a journey marked by strategic maneuvering, undeniably, and a darker path that included deceit. Let me share with you the intriguing tale of how he artfully framed Sofia for his misdeeds.

What happened to Sofia Falcone?

Following Oz’s departure, Sofia reconvened at her mansion. She summoned the leaders of every criminal gang in Gotham for a conference, assuring them that whoever managed to locate him would be rewarded with her estate and its territories. Link, Feng Zhao’s trusted lieutenant, harbored doubts, but Sofia asserted that she was prepared to relinquish everything as she intended to depart.

While Sofia was engaged in some task, Oz confronted Councilman Sebastian Hady at City Hall. He accused Sofia of detonating a bomb that devastated Crown Point and took lives. Furthermore, he falsely implicated her and Sal in crimes they hadn’t committed. Oz claimed that the reason behind Sofia’s actions was her mental breakdown after learning about the Maronis murdering her brother Alberto. In revenge, she allegedly torched Nadia and Taj Maroni’s property and destroyed Sal’s Bliss operation, which was based in the city’s underground tunnels.

Oz bartered away something in order to secure Hady’s assistance in smoothing his path into the halls of power and arranging introductions to some influential friends. This was a quid pro quo situation, as Hady could leverage this information to gain support from the Gotham citizens, potentially paving the way for him to become mayor.

Leaving City Hall with Hady tucked safely away, Oz encountered Zhao. However, it seemed as though Link had turned against Victor following their phone conversation; Link supposedly tipped him off about Sofia’s reward for Oz’s capture, but that wasn’t the truth. When they crossed paths at the hangar, after she torched her mansion, both Sofia and Zhao were taken aback when his soldiers started shooting unexpectedly.

In Oz’s world, Link was given what Zhao never offered – an opportunity for advancement. This was the same promise extended to the subordinates who felt unacknowledged and undervalued. They took matters into their own hands by eliminating their superiors, paving the way for a fresh wave of criminal elements to thrive. However, it seemed Sofia’s time might be running out as well, for Oz, in his final move, decided to take her on one last drive. Yet, it appeared he had one more surprise up his sleeve.

He walked her out so she could see the bridge and told her to turn around. Oz held his gun up to her head, but he didn’t shoot. She opened her eyes when a helicopter’s spotlight fell over her. Then she learned what Oz had really done. He was nowhere to be seen as she was arrested for all the crimes he told Hady she had committed.

After being sent back to Arkham, it seemed like there was no hope for Sofia, but then Julian delivered her mail. Amongst the typical rants, poems, and marriage proposals, she found a letter from Selina Kyle – yes, I did exclaim with joy upon seeing this! This was her long-lost half-sister whom she had never met. Whatever words Selina penned put a smile on Sofia’s face, and the light in her eyes returned. Here’s hoping these two will get to cause trouble in this world someday.

Does Victor Aguilar die?

Almost all threads were neatly wrapped up as “A Great or Little Thing” neared its end, yet there was one that enthusiasts dreaded might occur. Regrettably, it did transpire. Following the revelation of Francis’ state at the hospital, Oz and Victor decided to step outside for a drink and conversation.

In the manner he had throughout the season, Oz found solace leaning on Victor emotionally. In return, Victor mustered the bravery to express that he regards Oz as family and expressed gratitude for the opportunity given to him. However, this statement was ill-timed since while Victor’s role was instrumental in Oz becoming the ruler of Gotham, Oz ultimately decided to choke him to death despite sharing those feelings.

Picking his pocket, Oz took Victor’s money and threw his ID into the river. It was a tragic and infuriating moment but it also spoke to the kind of monster The Penguin has been telling us Oz is its entire run. Now, we wait to see the next part of his story in The Batman Part II. Stay tuned to TopMob!
