The Oscars job that's lost its shine: Jimmy Kimmel TURNS DOWN offer to return as host in 2025 and John Mulaney refuses offer too after controversies and ratings struggles

As a devoted cinephile and long-time fan, I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter in the saga of the Academy Awards. The Oscars have been a staple in my annual film viewing calendar, and I have cherished every moment of the glitz, glamour, and drama that unfolds during Hollywood’s most prestigious night.

Four months after the Oscars were broadcast on ABC, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has begun attempts to secure a host for the 2025 event, but no success has been achieved so far.

According to reports from Puck, Jimmy Kimmel was supposedly approached by the Academy with an invitation to host again, having previously done so four times, most recently for the past two years. However, he declined the offer.

As a huge fan of comedy and the Oscars, I was thoroughly entertained by John Mulaney’s heartfelt recollection of the iconic movie “Field of Dreams” during this year’s ceremony. His storytelling skills are second to none, and his ability to connect with the audience is truly remarkable.

The number of viewers for this year’s Oscars ceremony increased slightly, reaching 19.5 million, which is a 4% rise from the previous year’s 18.7 million viewers. However, it falls significantly short of the all-time record set in 1998 when Titanic won 11 Oscars and attracted 57.2 million viewers.

Despite a steady increase in viewership every year since hitting an all-time low of 10.4 million in 2021, ratings are still far from reaching their previous levels before the pandemic.

I’ve had the privilege of hosting the Oscars in both 2017 and 2018. The Academy tried something different for the next few years by not having a host for the ceremony in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

1) In 2022, a group of three hilarious women, Regina Hall, Amy Schumer, and Wanda Sykes, took turns hosting the show. They then returned the hosting duties to Jimmy Kimmel in 2023 and 2024.

14th Annual Governors Awards, held in January, was a night I’ll never forget – I, being the overly-excited fan here! Besides the magical memory of Field of Dreams, it was another moment when I felt I was standing on hallowed ground, as I cheered for the stars receiving their awards.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times following his third stint as host, Kimmel expressed doubts about returning to the role.

He expressed surprise, saying, “I didn’t believe I would experience that again. Yet, I attended two such events, and both went smoothly – something utterly unexpected transpired at one of them, creating a memorable tale for my future.” (Referring to the Best Picture fiasco where La La Land was erroneously declared the winner instead of Moonlight.)

He mentioned that the effort required for the Oscars is immense, causing him to reflect, “Perhaps I won’t choose to undertake this task again.”

But as hits like Barbie and Oppenheimer began receiving award recognition, he grew uncertain.

As an ardent film enthusiast, I was well-aware that there existed a movie familiar to many, and its presence undeniably simplifies my tasks. Sitting in the dimly lit cinema, engrossed in Barbie, I found myself musing, “Perhaps I’ll revisit this experience, as having a shared reference point with others makes the journey smoother.”

At the 2017 Oscars where I served as host for the first time, I told a joke about “Moonlight” winning the Best Picture award. It became evident to me that the large majority in the audience had not watched this film themselves.

In an interview with Variety conducted in June, CEO Bill Kramer was queried regarding Kimmel’s role as host and if Mulaney could potentially take over that position instead.

“Last year’s outstanding Oscars were in part due to Jimmy Kimmel’s involvement, and John Mulaney‘s performance was simply remarkable, as Kramer put it.”

He expressed that no matter who takes over hosting the show in the future, we aim to preserve the joyful, respectful, amusing, and movie-loving atmosphere. We have some excellent prospects.
