The opening scene of Terrifier 3 will go down as one of the best in holiday horror
As a horror enthusiast who has braved countless chilling nights and sleepless days, I can confidently say that Terrifier 3 has solidified its place as the ultimate holiday horror movie. The opening scene alone left me shivering with anticipation for more.
Two years later, the Terrifier film franchise is back with its third installment, focusing on the infamous antagonist Art the Clown, who continues his spree of killings. Notably, Art isn’t just a serial killer – he’s also recognized for his grisly methods, which often involve torture and maiming. These films are so graphic that they can unsettle even seasoned horror enthusiasts, but their unwillingness to shy away from intense violence and realistic effects has built a devoted cult audience.
In simpler terms, the third installment of “Terrifier” stands out as the finest within the series thus far. The script, cinematography, and acting have noticeably stepped up their game. The holiday theme adds an extra layer of excitement, making it perfect for viewing during the fall and winter seasons. With Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving” set for 2023 release, “Terrifier 3” now takes the spot as the must-watch Christmas horror movie. Particularly, the opening scene is truly noteworthy.
Terrifier 3 opening scene explained
In the third part of the series, things kick off with a bang, showcasing the most thrilling scene throughout the film. We delve into the life of a suburban family during the festive season, where the young girl is restless due to an unsettling noise outside. She shares her concern with her parents, but they dismiss it as nothing more than her overactive imagination. Her mother guides her back to bed, urging her to get some sleep. The girl seeks solace in her older brother, yet he brushes her off, trying to catch his own z’s.
The girl keeps hearing what seems like footsteps on the rooftop, and meanwhile, her mother goes to find the front door open. Annoyed, she shuts it and informs her sleeping husband that he failed to lock the door once more. This isn’t a major concern, but you can sense her unease. As the girl listens to noises downstairs, she steps out from her room and watches Art moving around the Christmas tree from the top stair step, all while wearing a Santa Claus costume. At first, she assumes it’s just Santa, but upon seeing his face, she senses something ominous is unfolding.
Art ends up getting upstairs and his first kill is the son, though all of this is off-camera. We then watch as he enters the parents’ room and repeatedly hits the father with an axe as he sleeps. The noise wakes up the mother, who is horrified at what she’s seeing. She runs downstairs but Art follows her and kills her, chopping off her arm and hitting her head with his axe right down the middle of her face. This is one of the more brutal kills of the movie, though there’s worse to come. We also see some of the son’s limbs which Art chopped off.
Yes, Art kills kids in Terrifier 3
In the movie “Terrifier 3,” Art enters the kitchen and hears a sound. Upon opening a cabinet, he discovers his daughter hiding there. The storyline concludes without revealing what happens next, but it’s likely that something unfortunate occurs. Despite the film depicting the deaths of several children, it does not show the violent acts themselves. This sparing of graphic violence is beneficial, as suggesting a child’s demise is acceptable, but viewing a graphic kill might be too disturbing for viewers.
In conversation with Total Film, directors Damien Leone and actor David Howard Thornton explained their choice to have children die in ‘Terrifier 3’. They felt it was essential for staying true to the character and what they believed he would realistically do. Thornton himself, who has a background in teaching and loves kids, commented: “However, these are horror movies.
The initial segment, though brief compared to the overall duration of Terrifier 3, leaves a lasting impact. It’s the most nerve-wracking part of the film and seems more cinematic than any other opening sequence in the franchise so far. Essentially, Terrifier 3 has crafted a modern holiday horror classic, and this opening scene significantly elevates the series.
As you line up to watch “Black Christmas” and “Silent Night, Deadly Night” this winter, don’t forget to include “Terrifier 3” on your viewing list as well. I plan to do so myself.
