The one thing that brought a smile to Edwina Bartholomew's face on the day the Sunrise star learned she had leukaemia

As a dedicated follower who has faced my own battles with health challenges, I can deeply relate to Edwina Bartholomew’s heartfelt post about finding joy amidst difficult times. Her story is truly inspiring and serves as a reminder of the power of family in helping us navigate through life’s obstacles.

Edwina Bartholomew shared on social media an unexpected source of joy she discovered on the difficult day when she learned she had cancer.

41-year-old Sunrise journalist shared publicly on Friday that she was diagnosed with leukemia, and since then, she’s uploaded heartwarming family photographs on social media.

In her post, Edwina expressed gratitude towards her friends and followers for their kindness, followed by sharing that spending time with her family helped lift her spirits.

With a picture of her two-year-old boy Tom holding a ‘door snake’ draft stopper while walking toward a nearby park, Edwina penned down touching sentiments.

Her post started with an expression of gratitude: “Thanks! Thanks a million for the love.” She continued, describing the last month as an unusually happy period.

Edwina started off by saying, “The very day after my bone marrow biopsy, Tom was adamant about taking our doormat, which we call a ‘door snake’, to the park.”

‘It made me laugh so much to accompany him down the street with the damn thing flung over his shoulder.’

In simpler terms, Edwina mentioned that carrying out her usual daily tasks alongside her family served as a reminder of the small pleasures in life during these difficult times.

‘It was a lovely reminder that life goes on. I have been ocean swimming, dreaming up plans with my husband Neil and handing out a lot of hugs. Long may that continue.’

Lisa Wilkinson wrote, “Eddy, you’re remarkably powerful and brave…I’m confident that you’ll overcome this challenge just as you always do, with your signature elegance and zest for living.”

Natalie Bassingthwaighte expressed: ‘I’m sending you a ton of love and resilience, along with some inner beauty!’ In response, Melissa Doyle said: ‘I’m sending you my love and resilience, darling.’

After Edwina announced her cancer diagnosis, made emotional on live television during the Sunrise broadcast on Friday.

She shared that she has received a cancer diagnosis, and it is both difficult to express and emotional for her.

‘It is a really good kind. It is called chronic myeloid leukaemia. It can be treated with a daily tablet. If I can take care of myself, I will be completely fine.’

After a moment, the seasoned television personality found himself choked up, confessing to the crowd, “I truly believed I could remain composed.”

It was Natalie Barr, Edwina’s fellow star, who ultimately led to Edwina’s swift diagnosis – this is because Natalie herself had discovered she had skin cancer on her nose during a routine check-up in June.

Worried about her personal health, Edwina decided to consult her physician for a mammography, blood tests, and a skin examination. Unfortunately, she received some distressing information afterwards.

Edwina shared that she underwent a mammogram due to some lumps she detected, and luckily, the results were clear. Additionally, she had an eye exam, which turned out well. However, her doctor also requested routine blood tests for her simultaneously.

‘One of those tests came back with levels out of whack.

I’m incredibly grateful and I thought it was fitting to let you in on why I feel so blessed. Primarily because each one of you has been part of countless joyous moments at home and here, from celebrations like engagements, weddings, and the arrivals of babies, to every memorable occasion. It seemed only fair to include you as well in this moment of good fortune.

A lot of you have faced similar challenges or even tougher ones, yet emerged victorious, becoming stronger and more resilient. That’s precisely my intention – to rise above this situation and emerge stronger too.

Edwina expressed another motive behind disclosing her disappointing update: She hoped it would inspire others to make their health a top priority too.

“For all those wonderful mothers who are constantly caring for others, remember to care for yourself as well. Don’t forget to schedule an appointment with your doctor,” she advised.

In July, the Seven individual learned about a startling health condition but chose to keep this information hidden from the general public, confiding in just a select group of colleagues at work.

She expressed gratitude towards all her fellow actors for their backing, specifically highlighting Natalie for regularly reaching out and supplying meals.

Edwina acknowledged her colleagues, Monique Wright and Sally Bowrey, who graciously adjusted their schedules allowing her to manage her own family obligations.

After expressing gratitude to her superiors at Sunrise, Edwina disclosed to the audience that she plans to take a break in September, and subsequently reduce her workload at Sunrise.

Previously, the host of Dancing with the Stars mentioned that upon her return to Sunrise, she intends to significantly reduce her work commitments, only dedicating a few days each week.

As stated by the Mayo Clinic, Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a relatively uncommon form of cancer that originates within the bone marrow, and it tends to advance at a leisurely pace.

A range of potential signs may appear, including bone discomfort, feeling tired, elevated body temperature, reduced weight, impaired vision clarity, and decreased interest in food, with additional symptoms possible.

Edwina shared that she experienced only a few of these symptoms predominantly, with exhaustion being the primary one. She attributed this to consistently waking up early in the morning, around 3 am, for her job.

Progress in therapy has significantly increased the chances of long-term survival for individuals with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). In fact, a majority of those diagnosed can attain remission and enjoy extended lifespans.

For six years, Neil Varcoe has been married to a woman who is known as the Seven star. Together, they have two young children – Molly, aged four, and Thomas, aged two.
