The Old Guard 2 director defends cliffhanger ending that fans have called “unfinished”
The Old Guard 2 major spoilers follow.
Victoria Mahoney, the director of “The Old Guard 2”, has stood up for the film’s debated cliffhanger conclusion.
The follow-up to the 2020 Netflix film is now available for streaming, picking up where we left off with Andy (played by Charlize Theron) and her band of immortals, progressing their tale further.

In this story, a mortal character faces off against Discord, portrayed by Uma Thurman, and Quỳnh, played by Veronica Ngô. Notably, Nile, who is KiKi Layne’s character, has been confirmed as the “final immortal.” This implies that she possesses the unique ability to strip immortality from any other immortal being she harms. However, these immortals can pass their powers on to someone else before they lose them.
In the course of events, Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) ends up making the ultimate sacrifice by returning Andy’s abilities to her before his demise during a fierce battle. On the other hand, Quỳnh relinquishes her eternal life.
As a gamer, I’ve come to realize that Discord isn’t invincible after all; she’s mortal and yearns for power. She’s snatched my team, hoping one of us might relinquish our powers to help her rejuvenate her strength, using the Nile as a means to do so.
Quynh switches allegiances after discovering that Discord deceived her regarding the primary objective. Now, alongside Andy, she stands ready for confrontation with Discord, ending the story in suspense.
As a passionate gamer, I must admit that the final act left me feeling rather divided. One player on IMDb labelled it as incomplete, claiming it lacked a satisfying conclusion and felt more like an open-ended puzzle than a resolved storyline. Contrastingly, another user argued it was one of the weakest cliffhangers in cinematic history.
As a gamer, I’ve stood by my decision, explaining to ScreenRant that my mindset was all about delivering the best experience possible for our audience, considering the previous 92 minutes of gameplay.
At that point, we had reached the location where our actions took place. The question arose, “Have we deserved this outcome?” In my opinion, yes, we did earn it. And based on my understanding, everyone else who participated in the decision-making process would likely agree with me as well.
Those leading the initiative sparked feelings of curiosity, excitement, and optimism within us. The means of arrival didn’t matter much to me. What truly captivated me were those emotions of awe, hope, resilience, determination, and solidarity that it brought about.
“As far as it being a cliffhanger, I don’t know how to approach things as a mechanism.”
According to an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mahoney shared that there were numerous talks and several options considered.
She shared that the production team preferred the ending not to be grim and somber, instead advocating for any form of expression that could make people smile, marvel, rally, cheer, and feel a piqued interest.
Mahoney found himself tossing and turning at night due to his desire to reunite with Quỳnh, reminding him: “Now she has a reason to be here. I felt that strongly.
Then, Andy has transformed into her original form again, resembling her character from before the first movie. The fractured aspect of her that emerged when Quynh was absent in the first film has been repaired.
The Old Guard 2 is available to watch now on Netflix.
