The Odyssey sets new record for Christopher Nolan with stunning box-office opening

Christopher Nolan‘s new film, The Odyssey, has had a remarkable opening weekend at the box office. The fantasy adventure earned an impressive $264.1 million worldwide.

As reported by Variety, the opening weekend for The Odyssey was Christopher Nolan’s biggest global debut ever, earning more than The Dark Knight Rises ($249 million). It also outperformed previous hits like The Dark Knight ($198 million) and Oppenheimer ($180 million).

Here in the US, The Odyssey has earned $124.5 million from 3,919 theaters, which is close to half of its total worldwide earnings. The film made another $139.6 million internationally, across 73 different countries.

With nearly eight months gone in the year, The Odyssey has achieved the third-highest opening weekend box office in the US for 2026. It earned less than Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million), but still performed very strongly.

While the second two movies are suitable for all ages, the first one is restricted to older viewers – age 15 or older, or rated R in the United States. This makes its successful launch even more noteworthy.

What to Read Next

Based on Homer’s classic poem, The Odyssey follows King Odysseus’s dangerous ten-year trip home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. While he faces monsters and challenges at sea, his wife and kingdom are also in danger back home.

Nolan wrote and directed this film, which features a strong cast including Matt Damon as Odysseus and Anne Hathaway as his wife, Penelope. Robert Pattinson plays the villainous Antinous, while Tom Holland stars as Telemachus, who is struggling to accept a potential stepfather.

Lupita Nyong’o will play two roles in the film: Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. The cast also includes Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, and Mia Goth.

According to David A. Gross of FranchiseRe, Christopher Nolan is in a league of his own. He’s the only director currently working who could successfully revitalize an old story, gather such a talented group of actors, and turn it into a major cultural moment. Gross notes that Nolan is a truly one-of-a-kind filmmaker with a dedicated and excited fanbase.

The Odyssey is out in cinemas now.
