It’s rumored that Primary Wave is about to purchase The Notorious B.I.G.’s music catalog, and it could be finalized within a few weeks.
Multiple reports indicate to The Hollywood Reporter that the publishing rights for a renowned rapper’s body of work could potentially be worth up to $150 million USD. The estimated value of his catalog is set at $100 million USD, while the masters are expected to sell for between $30 million USD and $50 million USD. These two categories are said to encompass publicity rights (involving his name, image, voice, and distinctive lyrics), as well as the masters which represent the recorded works rather than the compositions that fall under his publishing rights.
According to reports, the entire agreement is said to consist of half ownership of both publishing rights and masters, as well as the right of publicity. The cost for this acquisition isn’t yet clear, but a source suggests it may be within the millions.
News came in not long after the passing of Biggie’s mother, Voletta Wallace, on February 21st. However, neither Primary Wave nor Biggie’s estate has yet to make a statement about this unfortunate event.
