Action fans have a new reason to celebrate on Netflix! The streaming service already boasts a fantastic collection of action movies and shows, including blockbusters like *Edge of Tomorrow*, original hits such as *Rebel Ridge*, and thrilling series like *Black Doves*. Now, one of the most beloved martial arts franchises ever – *Ip Man*, which ran from 2008 to 2019 – has arrived and is poised to become a streaming favorite.
All four *Ip Man* films are now streaming on Netflix. The series is well-known among action movie fans, starring Donnie Yen as Ip Man, a skilled Wing Chun master. The films combine the real-life story of Yip Man, a Wing Chun grandmaster born in 1893, with exciting action sequences. The franchise also boosted Donnie Yen’s reputation as an action star, eventually leading to his role in *John Wick: Chapter 4*.
The first *Ip Man* movie takes place during Japan’s invasion of China. Yip Man, working as a miner to support his family, discovers a fighting tournament where Chinese laborers battle Japanese soldiers for rice. Driven to action after a friend is killed in the tournament, Master Yip enters to end the violent competition and resist the invasion. The film was very successful, and while it spawned three sequels, those films weren’t as well-received.

The *Ip Man* movies weren’t ever realistic, but the first one balanced flashy fight scenes with a somewhat believable story. Each sequel, though, went further and further over the top. What started as a story about a man fighting against Japanese forces quickly turned into increasingly absurd scenarios – taking Ip Man to America to battle US soldiers, a deadly English boxer, and, bafflingly, even Mike Tyson.
While the original *Ip Man* movie didn’t immediately become a blockbuster, it was very well-received by both critics and viewers, earning an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. General audiences loved it even more, giving it a 93% score. People particularly praised Donnie Yen’s performance, the constant action, and the amazing fight choreography. Although the fanbase may have become smaller with each sequel, those who remained were even more dedicated. The first *Ip Man* film boasts over 25,000 user reviews. In comparison, *Ip Man 4: The Finale*, featuring Scott Adkins (known from *John Wick 4*), has just over 500 reviews, but a higher overall score of 95%, and an 85% rating from critics.
