Hugh Laurie is diving back into the world of espionage with season two of The Night Manager. The new season launched with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, building excitement for its first episode in ten years. While inspired by John le Carré’s 1993 novel, the show tells a fresh story featuring the characters fans already know. This release has been highly anticipated for Hugh Hiddleston, and early reactions suggest it lived up to the hype.
I remember when The Night Manager first came out in 2016 – it really grabbed me! Tom Hiddleston played Jonathan Pine, an ex-soldier who went undercover to expose Richard Roper, a seriously shady international businessman. Hugh Laurie, who I loved in House, was absolutely brilliant as Roper, playing him with this really unsettling intelligence. The whole season, just six episodes, followed Pine as he risked everything to get close to Roper and finally bring him down. It was a tense, captivating watch!
I really enjoyed this series when it first came out – critics and audiences both loved it, with scores in the high 80s and low 90s on Rotten Tomatoes! Everyone immediately started asking for more, but it seemed like a one-off because there wasn’t another book to adapt. So, I was thrilled to hear in 2023 that not only are we getting more, but two whole new seasons! Even better, Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman are both returning, and it’s a collaboration between the BBC and Prime Video. It’s fantastic news for fans like me!
Season two of The Night Manager brings back Alistair Petrie, Noah Jupe, Douglas Hodge, and Michael Nardone as their original characters. New cast members include Camila Morrone, Diego Calva, Indira Varma, Paul Chahidi, and Hayley Squires. While Hugh Laurie won’t be appearing on screen this season, he’s still involved as an executive producer.
‘The Night Manager’ Season 2 Has Delivered a Perfect Debut

BBC/Prime Video
It’s rare for a TV show to receive universal praise, but this series has managed to do just that. Despite a few minor complaints about the long wait between seasons, it currently has a perfect 100% rating based on 14 critic reviews. The biggest issue seems to be the delay in its return.
Critics have praised the show’s exciting return. Olly Richards of Empire Magazine called it “fast-paced and tons of fun,” questioning why a sequel hadn’t been made sooner. Christopher Stevens from the Daily Mail highlighted Tom Hiddleston’s improved performance, noting his ability to express pain and doubt subtly. David Opie of Digital Spy added that the second season successfully expands on the original story in a way that would likely have pleased John le Carré.
