Peter’s time is officially ending in The Night Agent.
The spy thriller The Night Agent, starring Gabriel Basso, quickly became a global success after its 2023 debut, racking up an impressive 168.71 million viewing hours in its first four days. This made it the third most-watched new show on the platform at the time, and it finished its first year with a total of 20.6 million views. While seasons 2 and 3 saw slightly lower numbers with 13.9 million and 8.4 million views respectively, the streaming service decided to renew the show for a fourth season.
As a huge fan of The Night Agent, I was really intrigued by how they’d continue the story after season one, which was based on Matthew Quirk’s novel. It’s always a gamble when a show goes beyond the original book, but it’s actually been great! It’s allowed the writers to really focus on what makes sense for Peter’s character and, importantly, what the audience seems to enjoy. I was excited to hear that season four is heading to Los Angeles – a totally new setting for the show!
According to creator Shawn Ryan in an interview with TUDUM, season 4 of The Night Agent will be the last season featuring Peter as the main character. Production is already underway, and Ryan promises a satisfying conclusion to the series. He also shared that he’s been planning this ending for some time. You can find his complete statement below:
After seeing how well The Night Agent was received, I’ve been determined to create a satisfying and exciting ending for the series and for Peter Sutherland’s story.
I’m incredibly thankful to Netflix and Sony Pictures Television for their support of The Night Agent. They’ve allowed us to create a satisfying conclusion for our amazing fans around the world. We’re working hard to finish the story and make the final season truly unforgettable.
Gabriel Basso’s character, Peter Sutherland, will meet new characters in the upcoming fourth season of The Night Agent. The cast is growing with the addition of Titus Welliver, Li Jun Li, Trevante Rhodes, and Elizabeth Lail. After a complicated third season, the show is moving to Los Angeles, which will allow Peter to reconnect with Luciane Buchanan’s character, Rose Larkin – his first love. It’s unclear if Rose will be involved in Peter’s final mission, but the new location makes a reunion possible by the end of the series.
It’s currently unknown who decided to end The Night Agent after season 4. Even though viewership decreased, the show still has a dedicated fanbase. The fact that Ryan has been focused on giving Peter a complete storyline suggests the show will have a proper conclusion. This is a much better outcome than a sudden cancellation, which would leave fans unsatisfied with unresolved plot points.
There’s a lot of expectation for season 4 of The Night Agent to raise the tension even further. Last season, Peter uncovered a dangerous web of corruption reaching the very top of the government. Given how intense and deadly season 3 was, viewers are hoping Peter and his allies make it through alive this time around.
