The Night Agent S2 Finale: Peter’s Next Move & Season 3 Setup
2023 saw the debut of the captivating series “The Night Agent” on Netflix. In no time at all, it attracted a large viewership. This undercover spy thriller, adapted from Matthew Quirk’s novel of the same name, claimed the top spot among viewed series on the streaming platform for the first half of the year. The reason behind its success is clear. The 10-episode series offers compelling characters, pulse-pounding action sequences, and enough surprises to keep you guessing without veering into implausibility. It doesn’t quite fit the mold of prestige television, but it also steers clear of being a typical pulpy novel. Instead, it finds a perfect balance.
In the first season, the storyline established a challenging benchmark (it’s tough to surpass a government conspiracy that spans up to the White House and culminates in our protagonist rescuing the president from a helicopter bomb), but instead of escalating the scale, Season 2 smartly expands both horizontally and vertically. This time, Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso) transitions from working at a desk to the field, initially based in Bangkok before moving to New York, while his tech-savvy partner and love interest, Rose Larkin (portrayed by Lucianne Buchanon), reunites with him. Together, they delve into understanding the consequences and wrestling with the ethics of their dangerous, undercover missions, as well as dealing with the emotional fallout from these operations.
In the final episode of Season 2 titled “Buyer’s Remorse,” Peter and Rose manage to stop the impending chemical disaster in Midtown Manhattan that they had been working tirelessly to avert. However, once the chaos subsides and the crime scene tape is put up, there are still many aspects of the situation to analyze and discuss. Given that Netflix has officially announced a third season for the series, let’s take a look at where things currently stand and consider some intriguing questions that this season leaves us pondering.
Peter and Rose’s chemistry saves the day, literally
For most of its second season, the characters Peter and Rose delve into investigations, undertake secondary missions, and manage to extricate themselves from tricky situations as they seek to expose a closed-down government chemical weapons program known as “Foxglove.” The sensitive data related to this project, which includes the formula for a deadly agent called KX, has been misused due to Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum), a shady intelligence broker. In exchange for Peter obtaining a specific U.N. file, Monroe promises to disclose the location of terrorists, led by Markus (Michael Malarkey), who intend to release the lethal compound throughout Manhattan.
The bomb squad and FBI manage to catch or eliminate most of the terrorists and find 14 canisters of a harmful chemical near the U.N. building’s air vents, but one terrorist named Markus escapes and places the last canister in a nearby hotel’s HVAC system. Later, Peter and Rose shoot and kill Markus inside a hotel room, but they realize that a trip wire could release the toxic gas from the canister. To prevent this, their next action is to start a fire within the HVAC system of the building, which will automatically close all the vents. With only a few minutes left on the clock, Rose retrieves some sulfuric acid and ethanol from a cleaning cart and sets them alight. This causes a small fire that gradually grows, triggering enough flames to close the vents as the dangerous gas begins to spread.
This time around, it’s another nail-biting win, concluding with a heartfelt hug between Peter and Rose. However, the celebration is short-lived as they engage in a somber discussion. Similar to a poignant monologue from a superhero addressing their loved one, Peter confides in Rose about his concerns. He expresses his worry that as a Night Agent, he continually endangers her life whenever they’re together. “I need you to make me a promise,” Peter says. “As long as I’m the Night Agent, others will try to exploit you to reach me. If you follow my trail, you’ll be in danger. Promise me that you won’t wait for me to call. You hear I’m in trouble, you won’t come looking for me. Just let me go.
Later on, Peter voluntarily surrenders to his FBI supervisor, Catherine (Amanda Warren), who secures him to her SUV. Though he had released one of Monroe’s imprisoned assassins in order to negotiate with him, the Night Agent had inadvertently aided a traitorous act. However, Peter was convinced that this action had thwarted another potential catastrophe involving mass casualties.
Did Peter help influence the next presidential election?
In Catherine’s perspective, it’s hard not to agree with her. Following Peter’s questioning, he confesses that he embarked on a clandestine assignment for Monroe, involving the infiltration of the U.N., facilitated mainly by his Iranian contact Noor (portrayed by Arienne Mandi), who managed to produce an authentic badge for him. The document he stole from the archives turned out to be a file harboring damaging information against political candidate Patrick Knox, who was instrumental in the Foxglove project’s development and its eventual sale to Viktor Bala (Dikran Tulaine), a ruthless leader who tasked Markus with creating and deploying it within U.S. borders.
Thanks to Peter’s help, I was able to pass that damning file to Governor Hagan’s rival, Knox, in the presidential race. The incriminating details soon led to what became known as an “October surprise,” forcing Knox out of the race and paving the way for Hagan to secure the White House. Given the circumstances, this development holds significance for me because, as hinted throughout the season, Hagan intends to implement an isolationist foreign policy once in office. This means that the cost of information and intelligence will likely surge dramatically. As Catherine fears, it appears that I now hold considerable influence over Hagan, which suggests, as she warns, that any classified information that lands on the Resolute Desk could potentially be for sale to the highest bidder.
Season 3 will require Peter to become a double agent
At the finale’s conclusion, Catherine clarifies to Peter that he played a part in swaying an election, but this doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll spend his days behind bars. Presently, Monroe feels he can command Peter on demand (Monroe even provided him with a personal phone for communication) to ensure sensitive data reaches the appropriate recipients. Instead of terminating their agreement, Catherine explains that Peter will maintain the connection as an undercover FBI agent, much like his disgraced father did.
Catherine instructs him to ascertain the true nature of their relationship,” Catherine says. “He persists in thinking he has ownership over you, so we’re going to let him for now. There will come a time when he’ll ask for your help or give commands, and I want you to comply with his requests. Build his trust, and then we’ll uncover every shady character on his payroll before exposing him.” “I’m already in,” Peter replies.
Just like the conclusion of Season 1, Peter has a renewed sense of mission and another complex task ahead. However, it remains uncertain if Rose will get involved again, given that he specifically asked her not to wait for his call. Right now, she’s back in California, preoccupied with a work promotion, attending therapy sessions twice a week, and unaware of Peter’s recent activities. It’s challenging to envision The Night Agent altering its formula significantly in Season 3, but it seems unlikely they won’t cross paths again and thwart more impending threats together.
