The New Percy Jackson Season 2 Trailer Just Gave Us Our First Look At Thalia (And What Is She Doing There So Soon?)

Some SPOILERS are ahead for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books.

The second season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians arrives on Disney+ in about a month, and Disney+ has just released a new trailer giving us a sneak peek. I was surprised to see Thalia, Zeus’s daughter, featured so prominently in the promotional material! Let’s take a closer look.

The Latest Percy Jackson Trailer Is Epic, But What’s Thalia Doing There?

With the second season of Percy Jackson arriving in December, the longest trailer has just been released. You can watch it here:

Wow, what a trailer! Season 2 of the Percy Jackson series on Disney+ will be based on Rick Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters, and it looks fantastic. This new trailer, following the one released at San Diego Comic-Con, gives us a much clearer idea of what’s in store for Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and everyone at Camp Half Blood. We see that Grover will get into trouble, prompting Percy and Annabeth to go on a rescue mission, all while Camp Half Blood itself is facing some major developments.

One of the most exciting things for fans, including me, was spotting Tamara Smart as Thalia Grace in the trailer.

Disney+ subscriptions start at $11.99 per month with ads. You can watch shows like Percy Jackson and the Olympians with a subscription. For an ad-free experience, it’s $18.99 a month, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for a full year. See the deal here.

What The Thalia Tease Could Mean

In the first season, we discovered that Thalia is the daughter of Zeus, and a friend to characters like Annabeth, Luke, and Grover at Camp Half-Blood. She bravely sacrificed herself to protect them from a group of monsters. Instead of letting her die, Zeus transformed her into a pine tree on Half-Blood Hill, saving her soul from the Underworld. For those familiar with the Percy Jackson books, Thalia returns later in the story, specifically at the end of Sea of Monsters. This raises the question: why are we seeing her in the trailer for Season 2?

We already knew Tamara Smart was joining the cast of the new Percy Jackson series for Season 2, and I initially thought that was connected to the ending of Sea of Monsters. But the trailer hints at her role being more significant than I expected.

I think Thalia could be brought into the story in a few different ways. We might see her appear in Percy’s dreams, or the show could use flashbacks to show us what Thalia was like before this season, which is already being filmed. My most unexpected idea is that they might find a way to introduce her into the story sooner than expected, even changing some of the original plot. The first season already made some good changes from the book, The Lightning Thief, so we should be prepared for more creative surprises this season.

I think a combination of options one and two is most likely, but we’ll know for sure when the new season is released this winter. The first episode will air on Wednesday, December 10th.
