As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more movie reboots than I care to remember, the news of another Mummy flick piqued my interest. I’ve been through the highs and lows of these franchises, from the 90s action-adventure romp with Brendan Fraser to Tom Cruise’s less-than-impressive attempt in 2017.
The Mummy is getting another reboot, following the flop of the 2017 version with Tom Cruise.
The filmmaker Lee Cronin is taking charge of this production for New Line Cinema. Notably, the horror veterans from Blumhouse Productions and Atomic Monster (known for their collaboration on movies such as “M3gan”) are also joining forces as the project’s producers.
2026, something truly chilling is rumored to break free according to a tantalizing Instagram post by Blumhouse. It’s sending shivers down my spine just thinking about it!
Additionally, Cronin made a comment to The Hollywood Reporter, hinting that this Mummy film will be something entirely new and different from any other Mummy movie you’ve seen previously.
“I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”
The Mummy series originated from a collection of films that started in the 1930s, but it was significantly reimagined and became widely recognized in 1999 with an action-adventure romance reminiscent of Indiana Jones, featuring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. After releasing two sequels, injuries sustained by Fraser led to his departure from the franchise.
In 2022, I found myself expressing my desire to rejoin the beloved franchise in a role yet to be defined. Simultaneously, I shared my thoughts about what I believe led to the challenges faced by the more recent adaptation featuring Tom Cruise.
He mentioned that he wasn’t sure about the practicality, but he was willing to consider it if a good idea or plan was presented.
Making that movie seems challenging. What our Mummy lacked, and I didn’t find in the 2017 version, was an element of fun. It appears that’s what was missing from that portrayal.
The film was more of a conventional horror movie than an exhilarating adventure, like “The Mummy” ought to be. Instead of being filled with suspense and excitement, it ended up being frightening and scary, which is quite challenging to achieve. I’ve attempted it myself on three separate occasions.
