The Mummy 4 with returning stars lands release date as it’s hailed as “scary and fun”

As a huge fan of The Mummy, I was so excited when I first heard rumors that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz might be returning for another film! It’s amazing to hear Universal has officially confirmed it, though we’ll have to be patient – it looks like we’re going to have to wait two years to see it!

According to Variety, a fourth Mummy movie is planned for release in theaters on May 19, 2028. This new film will reportedly continue the story directly after The Mummy Returns, skipping over the third movie in the series. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are confirmed to reprise their roles as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell.

The announcement didn’t mention if other original cast members, like John Hannah and Oded Fehr, would be joining the project. While Hannah hinted last month that he’d enjoy reuniting with the cast, he didn’t confirm his return.

What to Read Next

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known as Radio Silence, are directing the next Mummy film, which doesn’t have a title yet. David Coggeshall wrote the screenplay. Sean Daniel, who has worked on the Mummy series for years, is producing with William Sherak, James Vanderbilt, and Paul Neinstein from Project X Entertainment.

Brendan Fraser will return as Rick O’Connell in the upcoming The Mummy 4, and he’s also a producer on the film, working with Jason F. Brown and Denis Stewart from Hivemind.

Radio Silence successfully revived the Scream franchise in 2022, so they understand what fans will be looking for in the new The Mummy movie. They’re well aware of the expectations surrounding a reboot of a beloved series.

Gillett, speaking with Empire, explained that after working on Scream, they’re being very selective about which franchises they join next. He said the script for their next project, by [Coggeshall], immediately stood out because it’s beautifully written, epic in scope, genuinely frightening, and also a lot of fun.

After news about the latest film emerged last year, Fraser discussed how he’s finally getting to make the movie he originally envisioned. While he’s pleased with the third film as a complete story, he clarified, “The one I really wanted to make is coming soon.”

For twenty years, I’ve dreamed of this moment. There were times I almost lost hope, but now the opportunity is finally here to deliver what the fans have been waiting for.

And we are ready for it.

The Mummy 4 is released in cinemas on 19 May 2028.
