A new Mummy movie is in the works, and it could feature a familiar face from the original films. After years of speculation, Universal has approved a fourth installment, potentially bringing Brendan Fraser back as Rick O’Connell. Now, reports suggest another major star from the earlier movies might join him, hinting at a significant shift in the series’ dynamics.
A recent report suggests Universal Pictures is interested in bringing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson back as the Scorpion King for a fourth Mummy movie. According to insider Daniel Richtman, the studio wants to include him in the first new installment of the franchise since 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. It’s currently unknown how significant his role would be.
Universal Pictures is hoping to bring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson back for a new ‘Scorpion King’ film, and they’re also interested in having him make an appearance, even a brief one, in the next ‘Mummy’ movie.
I was so excited to hear Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson talking about potentially revisiting The Mummy! He mentioned in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that he’s always willing to consider returning, but he’s incredibly respectful of Brendan Fraser and considers The Mummy truly his franchise. It means a lot that he acknowledges how much playing the role originally impacted his life – it really did change everything for him, and it’s heartwarming to see him open to the possibility of revisiting it all again.
I’m definitely open to the idea. That franchise—the Scorpion King—really belongs to Brendan Fraser, and I have a lot of respect for him. He’s been a huge supporter of mine, and we support each other. If they ever wanted to revisit the role, I have connections and would seriously consider it. It’s a franchise that truly had a big impact on my life.
Dwayne Johnson first appeared as the Scorpion King (Mathayus) in the 2001 film The Mummy Returns, where he played the villain. He then starred in his own movie, The Scorpion King (2002), which was a prequel set 5,000 years earlier, detailing Mathayus’s story and how he became king.
Universal Pictures is reportedly working on a fourth Mummy movie, continuing the story that began with the 2001 film. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are expected to return as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Currently, there’s no information about when the movie might be made or released.
How Dwayne Johnson Could Return for The Mummy 4

If Dwayne Johnson were to appear in The Mummy 4, it would be a very different situation than when he first played the Scorpion King in 2001. Back then, he was primarily known as a rising wrestling star, but now he’s one of the biggest and highest-paid actors in the world. Simply having his name connected to the film would immediately generate a lot of excitement and draw in a wide audience.
In The Mummy Returns, Rick O’Connell defeated the Scorpion King by stabbing him with a spear, causing him and his army to turn to dust. But given the franchise’s history of bringing characters back from the dead – like Imhotep in the first movie – there are many possible ways The Mummy 4 could bring Mathayus back for more adventures.
Since the movie is still in early stages, we probably won’t get official story details until Universal makes an announcement. However, with Dwayne Johnson joining Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, excitement is definitely building. This film is the newest in a trend of bringing back beloved actors for another action-packed adventure.
