After wrapping up a lengthy YouTube broadcast showcasing the cast of Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel had unveiled 27 distinct characters. One, Robert Downey Jr., was previously announced at Comic-Con in 2024. Some, such as Chris Hemsworth and Anthony Mackie, were virtually guaranteed; it would have been hard to imagine another Avengers sequel without them.
Initially, there were several unexpected names among the revealed roster today – approximately one third of it – that truly came out of left field. Many of these individuals have ties to the Fox X-Men franchise, which technically no longer exists after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox studio. While it wasn’t entirely surprising to see Patrick Stewart in “Doomsday,” considering his 2022 MCU cameo in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” some of the names announced today haven’t been associated with an X-Men movie in over two decades! It’s worth noting that a child born the year this actor last played a Marvel superhero is now old enough to legally drink alcohol. That’s quite remarkable.
Here are the top nine unexpected actors appearing in the cast of “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, there are also some noticeable absentees from the roster as well, such as Tom Holland (who’s absence as Spider-Man seems peculiar given his involvement in past Avengers films). One might even wonder if anyone else remembers Peter Parker’s exploits in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #5? But let’s save that discussion for another time.
The Most Surprising Members of the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast

Alan Cumming
Among all possible Fox X-Men alumni who could feature in “Avengers: Doomsday“, Alan Cumming would not have been my first pick. Cumming only appeared in one Fox X-Men film as the teleporting character Nightcrawler, specifically in 2003’s “X2“. Despite his remarkable performance, the prosthetic makeup used to transform him into Nightcrawler was said to be extremely challenging and expensive, causing Fox to forgo bringing him back even for a minor role in “X-Men: The Last Stand“. Perhaps technology has advanced since then; perhaps they’re planning on creating Nightcrawler entirely with computer graphics, like Kelsey Grammer’s Beast was in “The Marvels“. Regardless, this came as a pleasant surprise.

Winston Duke
M’Baku, one of my preferred secondary characters within the Black Panther universe, has always been a supporting figure. However, his ending in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” presents an intriguing twist: He is now the King of Wakanda. This new position could lead to M’Baku potentially becoming another Black Panther in the future, or he might show up in “Doomsday” as the leader of Wakanda, assisting the Avengers against Doctor Doom. Winston Duke delivers an outstanding performance as M’Baku, and his ability to portray both intimidating and comedic roles makes him an exciting addition to any film.

Kelsey Grammer
In the post-credits scene of “The Marvels,” an alternate dimension of the multiverse was introduced where Kelsey Grammer’s Beast meets Monica Rambeau. However, this doesn’t guarantee that he will show up in “Avengers: Doomsday” or that the movie would explore that particular plot point at all (since it wasn’t successful). But with a number of X-Men actors like Kelsey Grammer joining the cast of “Doomdsay,” it seems this aspect could play a substantial role in the film’s narrative.

Tom Hiddleston
In the current state of Marvel productions, Tom Hiddleston, known for his role as Loki, has been featured in a greater number of movies and shows than most. However, the conclusion of “Loki” Season 2 might have marked the farewell of Loki, the Trickster God. The plot hinted at him assuming the role of He Who Remains, the divine entity managing the multiverse. Such characters often remain in the background when they appear on screen; their duty is to safeguard every potential reality and all of time, a task that requires constant attention. However, today’s revelation on YouTube indicates that Loki will reappear in at least one more Avengers film.

James Marsden
James Marsden, who has been associated with the X-Men franchise for a long time, initially appeared to have parted ways with it after 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand.” However, he made a brief reappearance in “X-Men: Days of Future Past” alongside other original cast members, seemingly marking the end of that chapter. Surprisingly, he is back as Cyclops in “Avengers: Doomsday,” a role that many would have anticipated seeing other actors play first. There are several names I would have thought to see on the cast list before his, including quite a few who were not present.

Ian McKellen
Since Ian McKellen last portrayed Magneto in 2014’s “Days of Future Past”, Michael Fassbender has taken over the role. However, with Patrick Stewart coming back as Professor X, it seems fitting that we should also see the original Magneto again. And indeed, here is Ian McKellen!
In this version, I’ve tried to keep the same meaning and flow of the original text while using slightly different wording to make it more natural and easy to read.

Tenoch Huerta Mejia
In Marvel Comics, Namor has been an Avenger and a member of the Illuminati, a group of powerful individuals who handle affairs on their Earth (they were first introduced to the MCU without Namor in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”). He’s also had a turbulent history with Doctor Doom. Given these facts, it seemed evident that Namor would appear in this movie. However, in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, the portrayal of the MCU’s Namor felt more like an aquatic adversary than a global leader, not immediately suggesting a character primed for a significant role in future Avengers films. It turns out that I had underestimated his potential.
In Marvel Comics, Namor has been both an Avenger and a member of the Illuminati. He’s also had issues with Doctor Doom. This led me to believe he would be in this movie, but in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, the MCU version of Namor was more like an enemy of the sea than a world leader, not initially suggesting a character ready for big roles in future Avengers films. I was wrong about his potential role.

Rebecca Romijn
As a longtime fan of the X-Men series, I was thrilled to see Rebecca Romijn rejoin the cast in “Avengers: Doomsday,” alongside veterans like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. However, one cannot help but wonder if she’ll revive the controversial Mystique makeup from the original films, where she appeared almost bare with strategically placed blue scales. The question remains: will this iconic look make a comeback, or has it been replaced by something more modern?

Channing Tatum
Wow, it’s impressive how he carved out a niche for himself in the movies “Deadpool & Wolverine,” isn’t it? Interestingly, all the X-Men characters announced for “Avengers: Doomsday” are from the original cast. There will be no actors from the prequel era or recent heavyweights like Ryan Reynolds. However, there is an exception – Channing Tatum. Despite not getting his solo movie at Fox as planned, he made a surprising appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” and it was successful enough that Tatum began advocating for more Gambit roles. It seems his efforts have finally paid off!
