For six years, this gaming console has consistently been a top seller. Usually, success like this comes from having popular, exclusive games that attract loyal fans. However, the sales figures for this console suggest a different reason for its popularity.

New data shows the most popular PS5 games in 2025 are exactly the same as those in 2024. According to Mat Piscatella, a video game industry expert at Circana, the top five games remained unchanged year over year, sending a clear signal to Sony.

PlayStation’s Most-Played Games Aren’t Changing

For two years straight, 2024 and 2025, Fortnite was the most popular game on PlayStation 5. It was followed by Call of Duty in second place, Grand Theft Auto V in third, Roblox as the fourth most-played game, and Minecraft rounding out the top five.

On January 6th, Mat Piscatella shared this data on his Bluesky account (@matpiscatella.bsky.social). He got the numbers from the Circana Player Engagement Tracker, and they show what percentage of American gamers played each title in 2024 and 2025.

In 2025, several highly anticipated PS5 games launched, such as Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Dispatch, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Ghost of Yotei. These games all performed well commercially, with Ghost of Yotei exceeding 4 million copies sold by December. However, none were able to surpass the popularity of the year’s biggest hits.

Games like Fortnite, Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto V, Roblox, and Minecraft continue to be incredibly popular long after they first came out, with players consistently returning to them year after year. This isn’t limited to PlayStation – the trend is visible across all platforms.

Piscatella shared data on the most popular Xbox games for 2024 and 2025, measuring popularity by the percentage of active American players. Interestingly, the top five games were the same as those on PlayStation 5, though their ranking differed.

In 2024, the top PS5 titles were ranked from highest to lowest:

1. Call of Duty

2. Fortnite

3. Minecraft

4. Grand Theft Auto V

5. Roblox

In 2025, the rankings shifted to:

1. Fortnite

2. Call of Duty

3. Grand Theft Auto V

4. Minecraft

Although Call of Duty and Minecraft became less popular, the game rankings remained fairly stable. This indicates that no new games released in 2025 have yet surpassed these consistently popular titles.
