The Moomins Are Getting Their First-Ever U.S. Exhibition

Summary

  • The Brooklyn Public Library is set to host Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door is Always Open, the first-ever U.S. exhibition celebrating the work of Tove Jansson and her inimitable Moomins.
  • On view from June 18 through September, the show will feature a range of installations, archival materials and media artifacts from the beloved Finnish creatures.

In a novel exhibit, the beloved Moomin characters are gracing American soil for the first time at the Central branch of the Brooklyn Public Library from June 28 until September 30. Entitled Tove Jansson and the Moomins: The Door Remains Ajar, this exhibition opens a door to the magical realm of Moominvalley, coinciding perfectly with the characters’ 80th anniversary celebration.

Originally designed by artist and writer Tove Jansson, the Moomins have become cherished cultural figures not just in Finland, but worldwide. The upcoming exhibition provides a unique peek into Jansson’s fantastical world, featuring a Moomin house setup, historical documents, and a selection of books and animations. This journey begins with the first book, “The Moomins and the Great Flood“, published in 1945, and follows the evolution of this cartoon character across its various theatrical, television, and musical adaptations, highlighting these beloved, round characters and their diverse forms as we know them today.

The program also delves into Tove Jansson’s artistic heritage as a queer, politically-minded cartoonist and artist during postwar Europe, using her personal correspondence, sketches, and scarcely seen memorabilia to tell her story.

No matter if you’re six or sixty, “The Door is Always Open” offers an exceptional chance for Moomin enthusiasts of all ages not to be missed. Beyond the Brooklyn Public Library display, this beloved Finnish character is commemorating its 80th anniversary with a grand exhibition at the Helsinki Art Museum and a series of events taking place across Finland.

From June 28 onwards, the free exhibit will be accessible to everyone. For further details, please visit the library’s website.
